As a college freshman, it was not too long ago that I was deciding which university I wanted to go to. This is a decision which most high schoolers dread making, sometimes even if they think they know exactly where they want to go. Many factors went into the process of choosing which school I would be attending before finally deciding on Belmont University. I’ve made a list of some of the reasons I chose this school as well as why I’m pleased with my final decision. These are the top five reasons to love my school, Belmont University:
1. Location
Belmont University is located right in Nashville, Tennessee. White it is set apart from downtown quite a bit, 12th Ave. South and Music Row are just down the road. Since it is located in Music City, there is a thriving community surrounding the school with opportunities for aspiring artists—the majority of Belmont’s population—and live music for spectators to enjoy. Being in the big city allows students to explore new places and see what the outside world is truly like. Nashville itself encourages originality and creativity from its residents, appealing to the typical college student trying to explore and figure out his own life.
2. Music
As aforementioned, music plays a big part on Belmont’s campus. It seems as though no matter where you are here—in a dormitory lobby, outside near the gazebos, or in the Curb Café getting dinner—there is always a guitar being played or lyrics being sung by someone. It also feels like every other student you meet at this school is majoring in some sort of music-related field, primarily—you guessed it—music business. This would make sense because as mentioned in the first point, it is set in Nashville which is known mainly for its music.
3. Food
While the Caf might get old to a student who has been eating there all week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, there are many other food options on and around campus which are pretty good if you ask me. First of all, we have Chick-fil-a and McAlister’s which are both part of Belmont’s meal plan. I’m not saying I do this, but I definitely wouldn’t mind eating a chicken sandwich with waffle fries every day. Right across from the school on Belmont Boulevard, we also have a variety of options including Chago’s Cantina (Mexican), PM (sushi and burgers), and Bongo Java (coffeehouse). I’d say the taste buds of a Belmont student will be pretty pleased throughout the school year.
4. Size
Belmont is known for its smaller size, which may be seen as a negative aspect to a few but is typically admired by many. First of all, being physically small allows students to quickly go from one side of campus to the other, making the school day run smoothly and simply. Secondly, having fewer students than many state schools provides for a better sense of community and fellowship. This plays a major role in the college decision making process and is a big reason that many Belmont students chose this school.
5. Atmosphere
Belmont has been referred to multiple times as a “small town in a big city.” What this means is that while it is set in an urban area, the campus itself can be an escape or a refuge for those who may get overwhelmed with the busyness of Nashville. Placed in an area where nearly 700,000 people reside, Belmont’s small community provides a family atmosphere which is uncommon in surrounding areas. Students at Belmont are known to be friendly, open and welcoming to all, and it is a great privilege to be part of that.
