As an English Literature major, I find a particular joy in reading books that were written before there was such a thing as a YA section in the book store, particularly by people who did not live in America.
Actually, I prefer to read books that were written before there even was an America, but I digress.
Throughout my search to become the most well read and obnoxious person I know, I have run into a few of the greatest and, surprisingly, most accessible books, most of which were written before the modern and post-modern movements of the 20th century.
1. Pride and Prejudice
In all honesty, am I really a lit major if I don't list at least one Austen novel? This one is of course the most famous of all of Austen's novels, and with good reason. Elizabeth Bennet is easily one of the sassiest characters in all of literature, especially considering she was written in 1813. Her love story with the infamous Mr. Darcy. (Also I had a fish named after him once)
2. Portrait of Dorian Grey
This steamy novel written by Oscar Wilde will offend the more delicate sensibilities that you might possess. It follows the seductive story of Dorian Grey through Victorian England, as he wills his portrait to age instead of him. Or, you can just watch the movie with Ben Barnes (swoon).
3. Jane Eyre
This book might be hard to make it through at the very beginning, but once you make it past the first 20 pages, it is so worth it. Jane's all-encompassing love with Mr. Rochester, and her quest for independence from being reliant on people will inspire you and make you fall in love with Rochester, even though he ends up rather maimed when he tries to save his deranged wife from a fire. (I also had a fish named after him when Darcy went into the sea.)
4. Count of Monte Cristo
This story of vengeance set against the backdrop of the Bourbon Revolution in France tells the story of Edmond Dantes as he wreaks havoc on the men who unjustly sent him to prison. If you love watching people get what's coming to them, you will love this book. Also, there's a really intense love story in the background that will appease your appetite for l'amour.
5. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
You have most definitely heard of this story before, but you most likely will not recognize the story when you read it. Carroll's universes is so rich in ideas, that people take that and just run with it. But Carroll's novel for children is full of word play and other linguistic fun.
