My Top 5 New Year's Resolutions

It's day two of 2017.

I don't know about you, but 2016 was a big year for me.

I made friends, I started college, I grew as a person. But next semester is going to be a really busy one, and I won't have time to write for the Odyssey any more. I thought I'd share my top 5 New Years Resolutions with you guys as my last article for them. They're in no particular order of importance.

1. Read my Bible more

This might sound cliché, but I went to college and discovered that, plot twist, it's super hard to balance my social life and school work. Throw in my spiritual walk, and I am dead from lack of sleep.

Well, I'm planning on changing that. I'll be crazy-busy next semester, but if I get my time management down, I should have time to do some morning reading.

2. In fact, read more in general

Even though I already do more than my fair share of extracurricular reading, I need to diversify. Of the six books I read outside of assigned reading last semester, four were historical. Two-thirds. That's a lot, and while I like historical books and could read them forever, there are tons of excellent works from all sorts of genres that I haven't read. Jane Eyre, for instance.

3. Work out more regularly

Well, this isn't fair to all of you who don't know me, but for those of you who do, you understand. I'm pretty skinny. My goal is to get some real muscle on my bones by summer.

The main problem? I broke my foot in November. That complicates things, obviously. I'll have to figure something out.

4. Write more poetry

I am an atrocious poet, but it's an excellent way to release any sort of stress I might have.

Poetry is a beautiful medium and I hope to get a good deal of stuff written—no matter how bad it is, actually writing it is better than not.

5. Be more creative and open-minded—in everything

I can be a pretty black-and-white person. I'm not a huge math guy, but I like my problems with just one answer. I like to be either right or wrong.

That's not how art is. That's not how to be creative.

So the most general-purpose resolution is just that: be creative. Look at things from more than one perspective.

Hope y'all have a happy new year.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
