New York City is a town full of culture and absolutely buzzing with activity. While some tourists often flock to the city to see a quality Broadway play or shop on the famed Fifth Avenue, others come in order to see the incredible art collections housed within the many museums. There are so many to go to, but which ones are the best?
1. The Met Fifth Avenue
Formerly the “Metropolitan Museum of Art," the MET has the largest art collection in the city, containing pieces throughout all time periods in European art, as well as pieces from other cultures like Egypt, Japan, China and Africa. The MET has constantly rotating special exhibits on display, so each visit is a little different. Admission is suggested at $25 for an adult and $12 for a student, but if you go to a ticket desk, you can pay as much or as little as you would like! It is located on 1000 Fifth Avenue, New York. Definitely stop by and spend a day or two here.
The MET also recently opened a secondary building, the Met Breuer, specifically for contemporary art. Admission is the same price, and it is located on 945 Madison Avenue.
2. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
Famous for housing Van Gogh’s "Starry Night," The Museum of Modern Art contains art from the Post-Impressionism period on. It is the go-to New York City museum for all things modern or contemporary art. To those who may hate modern pieces, go anyway! MoMA’s section dedicated to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism is worth seeing, and at least one piece should interest you or teach you something new. Admission is $25 for adults and $14 for students. The museum also has free admission if you come on a Friday between 4 and 8 p.m. The museum is located on 11 West 53rd Street.
3. The Frick Collection
Housed in the former residence of art collector Henry Clay Frick, the Frick Collection proudly displays his acquired pieces of sculpture, paintings and furniture from as early as the Renaissance period all the way to the 18th century. The mansion is stunning and tranquil, offering an incredible environment to view famous pieces from artists such as Van Dyck, Whistler, Rembrandt and Vermeer.
While it is small, the Frick Collection contains an incredible atmosphere that is not found in a larger museum like the MET or MoMA. The Frick also houses numerous travelling exhibitions throughout the year, so it is definitely worth paying a visit to. Admission is $20 for an adult and $10 for a student. It is located on 1 E 70th St.
4. The Guggenheim
The Guggenheim Museum not only holds works of art within its walls, but the building itself is a famous work of architecture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The museum specializes in modern art from the 19th century on to match its unique exterior. Just witnessing both the inside and the outside of the Guggenheim itself makes the visit to the museum worth it.
The interior slopes on every floor a little differently and definitely heightens the overall experience of the visit. Admission is $25 for adults and $18 for students, and it is located on 1071 5th Ave. I would definitely recommend a visit here, at least to admire the outside if you don’t have time to check out the inside!
5. The Brooklyn Museum
While this is not immediately in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum definitely deserves some recognition for its amazing art collection. It would require a subway ride out of the city, but I think it is worth the trip! The museum holds many European paintings but prides itself on its incredible cultural works from Egypt, Africa and Asia. There’s a little bit for everyone here -- contemporary pieces for the modern lovers, classical European works for the lovers of painting and even political and feminist works that apply to today’s most prominent issues.
Brooklyn is one of the greatest cultural hubs in the nation, and it would definitely be worthwhile to pay this incredible museum a visit and explore all that Brooklyn has to offer. Admission is pay what you wish, just like the MET, but the museum recommends $16 from adults and $10 from students. The museum is on 200 Eastern Pkwy, Brooklyn.
So, whenever you decide to visit New York City and want to check out some amazing pieces of artwork, make sure to pay at least one of these museums a visit! I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
