It's time to head back to campus for the fall semester, and with that comes campus staples that both students and families cannot live without. As a second year Spartan at Michigan State University, I've come to be obsessed with the MSU Dairy Store and all of its goods. From fresh grilled cheeses made from MSU's house-made cheese, to the oversized shakes and malts, the Dairy Store has lots to offer. But, obviously, the best that they have is their wide, always changing selections of fresh-made ice cream. At a given time, there can be up to 20 flavors to choose from, and that can be quite overwhelming. So, to make things easier for you and your visit to campus, I compiled a top five list of the best flavors to snack on, keeping in mind that some flavors are limited time only and can only be found during certain times of the year
5. Huskers Sweet Corn
I know, you're thinking, "What business does corn have being in an ice cream?" Well, this is quite honestly one of the best takes on vanilla ice cream I've ever had. The corn brings out the vanilla flavor in a way you'd never expect, so don't be scared of at the idea of corn-on-the-cob flavored ice cream, because it's far from that.
4. Blue Moon
WHO DOESN'T LOVE A CLASSIC FLAVOR LIKE BLUE MOON? Relive your childhood in the best way ever with this classic flavor done to perfection. A bonus, however, is that the small amount of blue food coloring won't leave you looking like you just kissed a smurf.
3. Green Tea
Matcha powder is a trend that's taking the world by storm. This Green Tea ice cream is no exception. This flavor is a very refreshing bite that cools you down instantly. Perfect both in flavor and color for a casual autumn stroll through North Campus's gorgeous scenery.
2. Illini Orange Crush
Much like the most refreshing orange sherbet you've ever tasted, but obviously better when you add in milk from our esteemed MSU cows. Tastes just like an orange creamsicle, and who doesn't love that? The bits of orange flavoring throughout add a nice textural element that leaves you pondering why it's the best orange ice cream you've ever had.
1. Sesquicentennial Swirl
Yes, okay, I'm biased. This cake batter-like ice cream has swirls of bright green fudge and cake piece is, obviously, the best ice cream the dairy store has to offer. It is clearly the ice cream with the most school pride and won't disappoint. 10/10 recommend this any time of the year, even in the -10 degree weather walking to class int he winter. Worth every bite.
