The political disarray of this past election was the main focus all year, and through the downsides of 2016, it may be a little too easy to look past all of the good. The music industry in particular offered some of the best releases we have seen in a while, from Kanye's Life of Pablo and Chance's Coloring Book, to Beyonce's surprise visual album Lemonade. Rolling Stone may be able to deliver a list of the best albums on any given year, but below is a collection of artists who I believe didn't quite reach the spotlight they deserve:
1. AlunaGeorge
Often compared to Disclosure, the electronic music duo from London consists of singer/songwriter Aluna Francis and producer/instrumentalist George Reid. You have most likely heard their sound from DJ Snake's "You Know You Like It."
Suggested songs: "Not Above Love" and "I'm In Control"
2. dvsn
A Canadian R&B duo, made up by Daniel Daley and Paul Jefferies. Their one and only album so far, SEPT 5th, was released last spring. They are signed to OVO Sound, the same label as artists such as I Love Makonnen and PARTYNEXTDOOR and opened for Drake's Summer Sixteen tour. They are featured in Drake's "Faithful" from the album Views.
Suggested Songs: "Hallucinations" and "Too Deep"
3. Leon Bridges
An American singer and songwriter from Fort Worth, Texas whose sound is compared to late 60s soul artist Otis Redding. If you need a pick-me-up, he should be your go to.
Suggested Song: "Coming Home" and "Daisy Mae"
4. LANY
Formed in 2014, this three person alternative band from Los Angeles creates music that has been described as dream pop, serving as a good way to destress.
Suggested Songs: "ILYSB" and "Walk Away"
5. Gallant
Last but not least, Gallant, who released his album Ology in May of 2016, has a sound described by Pitchfork as "80s and 90s R&B," with a falsetto similar to Sam Smith's.
Suggested Songs: "Weight in Gold" and "Talking to Myself"
