WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE "THE SUICIDE SQUAD" AHEAD!
Let me start this off by saying that I am 95 percent ecstatic with how the recent "The Suicide Squad" film turned out. I firmly believe that we need more movies that star villains. We get so many movies that go in-depth with heroes' backstories; the bad guys have just as complex and interesting origins. But being a hard-core fan, I do have some issues with how the film played out. Here are my top 5:
1. The backstories needed to be more spread out
I get that DC is trying to catch up with Marvel in terms of connecting their movies. And the production team did a fairly good job with giving the backstories of each character AND having a separate film plot. But to truly understand each character and why they ended up in the squad, they each needed more time to flesh themselves out. It was pretty confusing trying to keep up with the backstories and why the actual film plot was happening.
2. What did Amanda Waller think was going to happen when she took Enchantress's heart captive?!
Look, I get this movie is fiction. But even fiction needs to have common sense. I do not care how much of a badass you think you are; if you are a mere mortal, you do not take a 6,000 year-old, multi-dimensional, teleporting witch's heart captive! If you don't know what you're dealing with, KEEP FROM MAKING IT ANGRY!
3. Why add characters if they're only going to get 10 minutes of screen time?
On one level, I get why The Joker was included. Even though he got little screen time, that time set up either a sequel or Joker/Harley Quinn spin off. But allowing Jared Leto to hype up the character so much/including him in the majority of the trailers set up a disappointing experience for Joker fans. Slipknot was also put in the same boat; he was used as the example to prove that there really where bombs injected into their necks. But again, he was heavily promoted.
4. Can we please get some realistic costumes for the females?
5. Can we please have it explicitly said that the relationship between The Joker and Harley Quinn is abusive?
The Joker and Harley Quinn are not in any way "Relationship Goals."
Harley is not his girlfriend. She is his victim.
Their relationship is one of abuse. She means nothing to him; the Joker sees her as another toy. He does not love her.
He tortured / abused her into insanity. Someone who earned a PHd. Someone who truly only wanted to help. The Joker is a deranged psychopath who took advantage of Harley's kindness and broker her until she became his puppet. She has severe Stockholm Syndrome. Their relationship is not one to idolize. It is a cautionary example.
