With the news of film director, producer, and Hollywood legend Garry Marshall's passing at the age of 81 on July 19, many will remember the amazing and timeless movies that the man created. Many of his films have become so ingrained in our culture, that they will live on well beyond the man's own life. In honor of his death, but more importantly of his life and work, here are the top five Garry Marshall films of all time.
1. "Pretty Woman"
It's the classic tale of boy-meets-prostitute. Richard Gere plays the handsome Edward who picks up hooker Vivian (Julia Roberts). Not only does this film counteract the "hooker" stereotype, but it also gave us that amazingly impromtu "oh look at the beautiful diamond necklace, let me touch it!" and then snap the box shut moment. Not to mention every girl's dream of walking into a store and saying "You work on commission, right? Big mistake. HUGE!" What a cinematic classic.
2. "Princess Diaries"
What little girl has't had the dream of waking up one day and having your estranged grandmother tell you that she is secretly the queen of a country in Europe? That and having a makeover done by a professional stylist. Anne Hathaway plays the lovely Mia Thermopolis who goes from zero to Genovian princess overnight. Fun fact, many of the same characters and scenes occurred in "Princess Diaries" and "Pretty Woman," even Garry Marshalls' daughter, Kathleen.
3. "Runaway Bride"
Another Garry Marshall film featuring the lovable duo of Gere and Roberts. The two were practically made for each other on the big screen. Their chemistry is undeniable. This film also has a really solid Dixie Chicks theme song.
4. "Raising Helen"
Starring baby Kate Hudson and Aiden from "Sex and the City" (John Corbett), this movie will have you both in tears and tears. Mostly tears. Have you cried recently? Watch this movie. It will have you in tears. Not to mention, you also get to see baby baby Hayden Panettiere and pregnant-with-a-baby Joan Cusack (who will definitely infuriate you during multiple times during the movie). Just be ready for tears. Did I mention you will cry?
5. "A League of Their Own"
All there is to say about this AMAZING movie starring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis is: "THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!"
