From Russia to Canada here are my top five favorite foreign films of all time.
France: Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964)
Also known as The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, the film stars Catherine Deneuve a french girl who works at a small-town boutique selling umbrellas and falls for a dashing mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo). With music by Michel Legrand and an emotional story; it may even leave you with a tear or two.
Canada: Anne of Green Gables (1985)
No matter how many times I watch this movie, it always stays at the top of my list. Set in the beautiful Prince Edward Island and consisting of three parts (Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Green Gables:The Sequel, and Anne of Green Gables:The Continuing Story) and 10 hours in total, it is a long film that seems to end too soon.
Italy: Cinema Paradiso (1988)
A 1989 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Cinema Paradiso is a true masterpiece. Accompanied by the beautiful music of Ennio Morricone, I will assure you it will be at the top of your list as well. It is also available on Netflix.
France-Ukraine-Russia-Bulgaria: East/West (1999)
Another movie staring Catherine Deneuve, a couple is trapped in communist Soviet Union after being tempted back by a false amnesty for exiles. A very powerful movie, which may seem exaggerated to those who have not lived through such a repressive regime, but it is sadly reality.
Russia: Ostrov (2006)
Whether you are an Orthodox Christian or not, this film will move you. A life changing experience takes this monk to a remote island in Russia. A very powerful film you will never forget.
I hope my choices will bring you much enjoyment as they as they have to me.
