There's no doubt about it, school is stressful. It may only be the first full week of classes for us Bridgewater students, but the chaos is already here, and we're stuck missing out adventures from Interterm. My remedy is to escape in adventures on Netflix.
1. Maidentrip
This documentary is incredible. A young girl, Laura Dekker, who is an expert at sailing, decides to sail around the world, becoming the youngest person to ever do so alone. Laura films the voyage, capturing the beauty of the open ocean and solitude. One of the coolest aspects of this film is seeing the different friendships she forms with older sailors. As such a young girl (14 years old), it is interesting how she befriends adults who are doing the same thing as her, for various reasons that are rather heavy. After seeing this film, I've never wanted to travel more.
2. Chasing Ice
Another documentary, this time about ice. Regardless of the debate surrounding global warming, the fact that glaciers are disappearing is irrefutable. This film follows a photographer who is making it his mission to capture the erasure of glaciers. The ice is beautiful, and the photographer's passion and nerves are inspirational.
3. Frances Ha
This might be my favorite film. It was released in 2013, yet it is in black and white, which is seemingly an ode to the fantastic acting and script; color and scenery could take away from this. It makes the girls feel older, like a "I Love Lucy" episode modernized, yet kept without color. It tells the story of friendship, and how growing up has the ability to change closeness in a way that is hard to accept. This movie will make you feel loved.
4. I Am
This is another documentary (I've been on a bit of a doc kick). The director of "Ace Ventura" decides to travel the world to meet with different philosophers to discuss what the world is, and what is outside of the world. This is a film that encourages us all to think about "what's right with the world."
5. Night Train to Lisbon
After saving a woman who was about to commit suicide, a Swiss professor gives up his entire life to chase after the memory and story of a famous poet, the poet of the book he found in a jacket left by the woman he saved. This is a beautiful film that has the ability to make a reader who has become sick of reading for school fall back in love with poetry. In my opinion, this is the perfect film to watch when learning has taken over your life and you miss learning for fun.
