Tucked between Netflix Originals like “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and popular sitcoms like “Friends” lay Netflix documentaries. I will admit that I first truly discovered Netflix documentaries while actively procrastinating (see: laying in bed) one Sunday afternoon, but don’t let my passive discovery fool you, this section holds arguably the best content on the whole website. While it would be impossible to compose a detailed list reviewing of all my favorite documentaries, I decided to pick five.
1. Miss Representation
I first saw this documentary before Netflix really took off (I know, like eons ago) but it’s what I would consider a “must see.” If you’re looking for a documentary that will further open your eyes to the ridiculous ways women are portrayed in the media, here you go. If you refuse to believe that, in the 21st century, women are subjected to unfair social stigmas and criticisms, this one is also for you (maybe more so).
2. Planet Earth: The Complete Collection
"I can show you the world" is what the subtitle for this documentary series should be. Whether you’re into animal biology or not doesn’t really matter. Just know that you will slowly be pulled in, unable to stop watching, and you will come out the other side believing you’re an environmental expert.
3. Blackfish
I cried. I really cried watching this documentary about killer whales. If that’s not enough reason to watch, I’m not sure what else is, but this documentary has received so much media attention for a reason. Warning: You will want to singlehandedly take down Sea World after watching, I promise.
4. Ancient Aliens: Full Series
I know how the title sounds but bare with me. Produced by the History Chanel, this documentary series is actually pretty interesting. I’ll be the first to admit that the concepts and claims get a little bizarre (see: otherworldly) after the first few episodes, but hey, it definitely makes you think.
5. 180 Degrees South
I’ll admit that I was a little skeptical of this documentary when a friend first recommended it, but not even 15 minutes in, I knew it was going to be great. For an hour and a half, follow an adventure-seeking surfer on his trip to South America. Also, bonus points because you get to learn some of the origin behind Patagonia and The North Face.
