Complex Magazine first ever convention took place this month on November 5th-6th in Long Beach, California. The whole vision was to bring to life the world of complex and bring the world of fashion and urban culture together. This convention entailed: Food, Fashion, Music, Debate, and Urban Culture. It's safe to say that I had the most intense culture shock just being in California, period. People out there dress up like they're on set for a movie ALL day EVERY day, where as down south in Texas I'm used to people being so casual no matter what the occasion. But I quickly caught on to the wave and learned a lot about fashion at ComplexCon.
YEEZY'S 350v IN GAME MACHINES.
Mind you, YEEZY's MSRP is roughly around $220 but they sell out so quick that the only way to buy them is through resale and purchasing them than is anywhere from $800-$1000. But Complex had them inside the classic "Key Master" arcade, game machine for only $5 a try! Like WHAT? That's a potential $875 profit waiting to be made!
Action Bronson, Wiz Khalifa, and The Game Smoking Weed during a talk-panel about weed.
"The Business of Weed" ComplexCon(versation) featured chef and rapper, Action Bronson, who has his own food-travel show on the side while he tours, Wiz Khalifa, The Game, Dr. Dina, the first person to open a marijuana dispensary in LA, and editor in chief of Merry Jane Media, Noah Rubin.
This conversation started off talking about the business behind weed, and how it has affected the economy and the trials and tribulations that the pioneers of the weed industry have had to face along the way to decriminalization. But they got so zooted that the conversation became a pow-wow, sharing their personal experiences and how weed has affected their lives. The craziest part about though was that EVERYONE in the room pulled out their own persos and started smoking too! The room we were in was rather small and more intimate in size, creating a very relaxed and easy-going attitude among the observers and the speakers.
Travis Scott and his Gigantic Bird?!
I didn't like Travis Scott at first, but after I saw him live in concert, I was converted. His fans were full of life and his performance was so wildly passionate that it was hard not to get into his music. At first, I'm not going to lie, I was creeped out. I felt like I had walked in on a cult ceremony. Then to make the misconception even worse, he brings out this huge, mechanical bird---like what?! Looking back, that was a great artistic notion considering his latest album was titled "Birds in the Trap McKnight".
Re-selling Houston Culture---"I can find that shirt for $10 back home, homie"
Being from Houston, some of the first hip hop music I was ever introduced to was in fact, Houston rap---especially Z-RO. So seeing a vendor at ComplexCon dedicated to Houston gear was awesome! Naturally, I was excited and I looked through all t-shirts and asked how much they were going for, the vendor looked at me and said ever so confidently and said, "That one is $70".
I swear time stopped moving and I took advantage of the cosmic glitch to slap him upside his head and said, "I can find that shirt for $10 back home, homie". Back in reality, I was courteous, but I was still at a loss for words. Like, really? $70? I said, "Wow I didn't realize that people in California listen to Houston Rappers like that". He looked back and said, "Yeah we're all about that movement". I turned away, dumbfounded, and told my friends that we are a movement. We laughed and continued on with our lives.
(and it was printed on a Hanes t-shirt, what a shame)
Celebs Just Walking Around
There was everyone there! Pharrell, Kid Cudi, Lil Yatchy, Timothy De La Ghetto, and that's just to name a few. In one instance, me and my friend were just walking to the restroom, and lo and behold, we saw Karrueche Tran pass right in front of us! ComplexCon truly lived up to the term "pop-culture".
