Today's kids are constantly playing games on their iPads, Xbox Ones, PS4s, and even their parents' iPhones. They never got to experience the best of the best when it came to computer game classics. They're too busy playing games with next generation graphics. Here are the top five classic computer games that today's kids miss out on:
5. The Putt-Putt Series
Whether it's "Putt-Putt," "Freddi Fish," "Pajama Sam," or "Spy Fox," these were all games that kept you glued to your computer screen. My personal favorite was "Putt-Putt." Traveling through time, winning the big race, saving the zoo! There was nothing this little car and his dog Pep couldn't do. I spent hours upon hours playing this game and it was well worth it.
4. "The Oregon Trail"
This game was notorious in elementary school. For those of you who don't know, you create an all-star lineup of people to take on the Oregon Trail with you, whether they are your best friends or famous people. You had your choice of going at a steady, strenuous, or grueling pace. More times than not, I would choose the grueling pace because I was extremely impatient and didn't understand just how "grueling" the grueling pace was. This ended up leading my whole tribe to death ... but boy was it a great time.
3. "Backyard Sports"
Another killer series from Humongous Entertainment. I reference "Backyard Sports" collectively because it's unfair to choose one over another. "Backyard Soccer," "Football," "Baseball," "Basketball," and "Hockey" were all amazing. Not only were you playing with professionals from each sport, but also some legendary amateur kids, too.
Pablo Sanchez, aka The Secret Weapon. Pete Wheeler, a speed demon. Even Kenny Kawaguchi, the guy in the wheelchair!
Not only are these games filled with memorable characters, but they all have special color commentators, too. Sunny Day appears in basically every single game, with clever co-hosts like Vinnie the Gooch ("Backyard Baseball"), Earl Grey ("Soccer"), Chuck Downfield ("Football"), Barry Dejay ("Basketball"), and Buddy Cheque ("Hockey"). These guys were home to tons of one-liners that I still use when I play sports today! It's a great series and a little piece of it stays with everyone who has experienced it.
2. "The Sims"
"The Sims" is another super successful game that started back in 2000 and is still releasing expansion packs for its fourth edition today! Players start with a stereotypical family, raise the kids until they're adults, getting them jobs, and beginning a new generation from there. I'll be honest – it doesn't sound very fun when the game is explained to you, but there are so many approaches to how to create and raise a family that you can sit down and play this game for three or four hours in one sitting.
You've never played "The Sims" if Shift+Control+C and "motherlode" or "rosebud" don't remind you of becoming an instant millionaire.
1. "Roller Coaster Tycoon"
Back in 1999, a series was born where kids could display their creativity in the form of theme parks. You could create roller coasters that did 100 loops, went underground, or even ones that crashed and killed all of your peeps (if you were one of those kinds of players). "RCT 3" included water parks where you can even design waterslides for your peeps. This is another game you could sit down and play for hours at a time.
"Roller Coaster Tycoon: World" is set to be released in the very near future. This is set to be the most innovative "RCT" yet, and for $50, I may just buy it.
Hopefully, I sparked a trip down memory lane, but if you'll excuse me, I'm going to download all of these and start playing them again.
