Oh, college! Such an amazing, fun, educational, and unforgettable experience. Yet, at the same time it can also be stressful, overwhelming, and difficult. Every adolescent deals with double standards at some point in their life because they are constantly conflicted with what they think the world expects from them. We have heard so many tips on how to adjust to college life or what to do to be successful in college, but when I put everything I've heard about college together I often laugh at how contradictory everything is! So here is a list of the main contradictory statements about life at college that we all hear practically everyday:
1. "You don't have to worry about choosing your major right now... but make sure you choose your classes based on a specific track!"
2. "Remember to always focus on school work before anything else... but make sure you go out every weekend and be social!"
3. "Always make sure to get as much sleep as possible... but definitely stay up as late as possible to make sure you finish that paper on time!"
4. "Never overwhelm yourself with work or activities... but don't forget to join as many clubs as possible to get yourself out there!"
5. "Save as much money as possible... oh but also don't forget you have to buy all your textbooks and food and everything else on top of your already crazy expensive tuition!"
So when you feel pressure to do everything perfectly and are overwhelmed by people's expectations for you, just remember to try the best that you can and that no one is superhuman. Everyone has potential to succeed in college and in life, so you don't have to overwhelm yourself. Listen to your body, and make sure to do what is right for you instead of worrying about what others expect from you!
