Music transcends above all art, it is the pinnacle of creation. All of us have encountered a song that has emotionally moved us to do better, and to keep fighting the hardest obstacles in our lives. Perhaps one of the major factors of this relationship lies in the artist's ability to translate their emotions and essence in their music to us, the public. This is my list of my top 5 artists and songs that have done just that for me: lift me up from a hole of pity.
5. Ed Sheeran - "Give Me Love"
"Give Me Love" explores the realm of love that is burning out. The acoustics behind the song beautifully melt in with the rawness of the words, creating an exquisite sound for my ears that simply breaks my heart. The song goes beyond that, by illustrating the tragedy of deciding whether to leave someone behind, or to stay and "play hide and seek". This is still my favorite song that Ed Sheeran has ever put out and it will remain so for a long time.
4. Coldplay - "The Scientist"
Where do I even begin? My first encounter with Coldplay was when I arrived in the US in 2006. I was in the car heading to my dad's place from the airport, when the song came on the radio. Even though I couldn't understand the words that Chris Martin (the lead singer) was saying, the song still managed to touch my anxiety with its melody and rhythm. "The Scientist" is predominantly about analyzing a break up to where it all began.
3. Adele - "Chasing Pavements"
Adele, Adele, Adele, Adeleeeeee. You have been an inspiration and a motivator for me since 2008. When I heard you singing "Chasing Pavements" live, you left me completely flabbergasted. The song connected to my soul, it took me on a journey with no end. This song discusses her blind hope to get the lover she wants, even though she knows it will end on bad terms. This theme is something that all of us can relate because it is mundane and realistic.
2. Miley Cyrus - "Someone Else"
Miley is one of my biggest motivators in the world; even with all her craziness, she still manages to deliver performances and songs like no one else. " Someone Else" is an exceptional song from her latest album "Bangerz". The song talks about moving forward from a relationship once you left in the dark. She delivers the song at a fast pace, which surprised me, since this was not her style of music.
1. Jessie J - "Who You Are"
No one can sing like Jessie J. That's not a question, it's a fact. "Who You Are" literally got me out of a depression. The song immerses you into the world of accepting yourself, even though your body and mind completely go against the notion. I found myself repeatedly replaying the song over and over again, until I got up and decided that, instead of drowning myself in negativity, I should rejoice for life.
