I have been writing stories since I was four years old; while the majority of children played outside or with toys, I would always choose to stay inside and create stories with the brief vocabulary that I had - that was complete with marvelous attempts at illustrations. As an adult, that love for creating or retelling stories through words has not changed; although, with an insanely busy life, and years and years of being told what to write and precisely how to do it, my talent for writing began to subside underneath the deadlines. Even all the way back in elementary school, when I would "write too much." It was eventually drilled into my brain how to write a 5 page essayand not a story. It was not until two months ago, that I was introduced to the opportunity to express my writing talents completely; The Odyssey Online. I adored the thought of being able to write whatever my heart desired each week, and I have not been disappointed in applying. Incase you are deciding weather or not you want to be a content creator for the Odyssey, here are my top 4 reasons for absolutely loving it:

1. Meeting The Midlothian Odyssey Family:

From the moment that I was introduced to the team, I instantly felt welcomed. I was intrigued by the closeness of the other creators, and was eager to be a part of it. Reflecting back on the past few months, there was one thing that I particularly noticed; we always compliment or encourage each other to be better creators. Each week, there is some way or another to be recognized, whether it's through the Article Spotlight of The Week, or being mentioned in our weekly newsletter, everyone gets their chance to feel included.

2. Being Able to Show Off My Writing Talents:

In the past 13 years of my life, I was always encouraged to write under certain parameters. Writing has always been a passion of mine, however, being told what to write can allow for an abundance of writer's block, and a major stunt in growth. When I joined The Odyssey, I was able to finally express my true potential in the writing field. I had almost forgotten how much I loved it, and it felt wonderful to have that feeling return in my life.

3. Being Able to Tell My Mom and I's Story:

The first article that I was about my mom. At that time, she was battling a long and difficult battle with lung cancer. When I was given the opportunity to pour out my heart about her diagnosis year, a weight was immediately lifted off of my shoulders. When she eventually passed away, I was able to utilize the Odyssey to talk about the past year with her. It was extremely special that I could not only show the world how beautiful my mom was, but create a piece that I can read over and over again, and soak up every memory.

4. Having an Escape From My School Workload:

Senior year has been a tough year; every week, I am swamped with loads of work. Whether it's government or AP Literature, or my boyfriend asking me for help, school is driving me absolutely bonkers. With that being said, dedicating part of my week to writing for Midlothian, eases the stress that school so generously provides.

Ultimately, writing for the Odyssey has not only helped me get through the week, but also the past few months. Whether I was writing something deep and personal, or reading a phenomenal piece from a co-creator, I've loved every minute of it.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
