My Top 4 Pet Peeves on the Southern Express

My Top 4 Pet Peeves on the Southern Express

As a senior at Georgia Southern, I have seen our bus system go through some changes. I honestly have no complaints about the actual bus system or bus drivers. The way I see it, as long as we don’t have anymore “small electrical fires,” then I have no complaints. Well... except for some of the things I have to deal with on a daily basis because of the students I ride with.

1. Loud Music

The students at Georgia Southern wear headphones everywhere. They help to avoid the people at the Rotunda and they get you pumped up for your 8am Intro to Whatever class. We all love headphones. What we don’t love is the one guy on the bus at 7:30am blasting loud music. Especially when I can hear your music even when I am wearing headphones, too. Georgia Southern students, I am begging you to please turn your volume down because I don’t want to hear your music everyday.

2. Using Multiple Seats

I honestly feel bad whenever I see art students dragging around their huge portfolios, or the 8am yoga students lugging around their yoga mats. Nevertheless, your class schedule does not give you special seat privileges. The new bus fleets have a lot of seating and standing space, but when one person takes up three seats, it kind of ruins everything. So hold your stuff in your lap or at your feet and try to sit in one seat if the bus is going to be full.

3. Cell Phone Use

As a generation, we are somewhat obsessed with our phones. There are a million things you can do on the average smartphone; using the actual phone feature isn’t really the most popular thing. UNLESS WE ARE ALL ON A CROWDED BUS. For some reason, in my experience, the crowded bus on Forest Drive provides the perfect place for personal phone calls. I understand emergencies but please keep your phone conversations off the bus. The rides are short and there are so many other things you could do on your phones!

4. Overly Eager Crowds

Surprisingly enough, the most annoying bus behavior does not even happen on the bus. Our buses are very large and they can fit a ton of students, but for some reason we have all been brainwashed to believe that only the first 5 students can get onto the bus. This ridiculous idea makes it impossible to get off the bus when it stops because everyone rushes the doors as soon as the bus stops. There have been multiple times when I have had to wait to get off the bus because the doors were too packed to get off. We are all “adults” here; lets all actively try to calmly wait to get onto the bus until everyone has exited.

What are some of your bus pet peeves?

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
