With the 2017 winter anime season halfway finished, there have been many anime that have caught my attention, but there are only three that have really stood out to me thus far and kept me updated and watching.
1. "Demi-chan wa Katarita."
The world of "Demi-chan wa Katarita" consists of humans and demi-humans (vampires, succubuses, dullahans, etc.) that coexist alongside one another in society. So far, the anime has done a great job of incorporating fantasy creatures and modern society in an entertaining way, displaying the unique lifestyles that each of the demi-humans have to live, as well as the difficulties they face throughout their daily life. The characters are the strongest point of this anime, with the show focusing on their personal struggles and challenges. Having the regular human biology teacher, Takahashi Tetsuo, be the central character that brings everyone together gives more contrast over to the demi-humans' individuality within the show. Overall, "Demi-chan wa Katarita" is quite a relaxing watch, and a great anime to end the day with.
2. "Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon."
So apparently, dragons have the capability of turning into anything they want, and in this case, it's a house maid. "Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon" follows the life of a computer programmer named Kobayashi who lives a rather dull and repetitive cycle until she meets the dragon Tooru, who desires to be Kobayashi’s maid after a shotgun promise. The whole show revolves around the Tooru trying to do her best as a maid, but ultimately always causing some sort of trouble or misunderstanding. The comedy in this anime is hilarious and always keeps going one after the other. Plot isn’t that significant in this anime, but the "slice of life" aspect makes "Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon" such a fun show and easy to pick up.
3. "Kuzu no Honkai."
Probably the most emotionally intensive anime of the season, "Kuzu no Honkai" does well in portraying some of the darker aspects and circumstances of romance, which is quite captivating since not many other anime get into those subjects. Hanabi Yasuraoka and Mugi Awaya both have someone that they like in which they cannot capture the attention of. Thus, in order to cope, they both agree to use each other as a replacement. The big standout of this anime for me is definitely the dialogue and the story; the relationships between each character and their interactions with one another heavily affect the way they cope and express their desires, leaving everyone in an intertwined mess. The amount of hurt and deception in this anime keeps me on the edge of my seat, always wanting more by the end of each episode. I can’t wait for it to finish and I’m excited to see how this all ends.
So which ones are your favorite anime from this most recent season?
