Who is Lecrae?
Lecrae is a hip-hop rapper from Houston, Texas. When a person thinks of Texas rappers, he or she may immediately think of Bun B, Slim Thug, Chamilionaire, Paul Wall, the Geto Boyz, Mike Jones, and other members of the Screwed Up Click. Of course, the, late, great, Pimp C, can not be forgotten. Texan rappers, with their chopped and screwed style, helped revolutionized the southern rap culture. When listening to Lecrae's music, it is impossible to ignore his Texan flow. Lecrae is not your ordinary rapper, rapping about the same things as the next guy. He is different. He is an anomaly. Lecrae is a Christian. While staying true to his beliefs, Lecrae uses his music to reach out to his fans and other celebrities. He makes songs that helps people to be better people. There are many of his songs that you would be able to relate to, even if you are not a Christian. When you hear a song by Lecrae Moore, you will want to hear more. Here is my list of favorite Lecrae songs. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
1. "Background" (featuring Andy Mineo)
When recommended new songs to listen to, "Background" is my first choice because of the lyrics and message of the song. Lecrae is telling his listeners to humble themselves and let God lead the way.
2. "Church Clothes"
In this song, Lecrae is challenging Christians to be truth to their faith and do away with all the hypocrisy. "Church Clothes" sets the bar high for best Lecrae songs.
3. "Gangland" (featuring Propaganda)
Racism and social injustice is, unfortunately, at all time high in our nation. Speaking out against the social issues because a norm during 2016. In his "Church Clothes 3" mixtape, Lecrae took a more advocating approach. As a Christian and African America, taking a stand seems more right than staying neutral.
4. "Don't Waste Your Life" (featuring Cam and Dwayne Tryumf)
The title of the song explains the whole message. Don't waste your life.
"Everyday I'm living tryin' to show the world why
Christ is more than everything you'll ever try
Better than pretty women and sinning and living
To get a minute of any women and men that you admire
It ain't no lie" - Lecrae
5. "Welcome To America"
The song gives three different perspectives on America. Being that we come from different communities (some of us are from different countries), our view of America should be different. A person from a poor-income gang-related neighborhood will have different experiences than a person from a wealthy gated-community. What is your perspective on America?
6. "Mayday" (featuring Big K.R.I.T and Ashthon Jones)
For his incredible album, "Gravity," Lecrae decided to team up with Big K.R.I.T. and Ashthon Jones, who was an Ameircan Idol finalist in 2011. K.R.I.T. raps about his views and problems with Christian hypocrisy in the church, and Lecrae delivers a response to K.R.I.T.'s concerns. As laways, Lecrae is calling for us and challenging us to be better and do better. If you're looking for positive rap songs, "Mayday" is one to keep your ears open for.
7. "Say I Won't" (featuring Andy Mineo)
Why are y'all scared to be different? Lecrae is an anomaly. Listening to this song allows the audience to witness a different style of flow for Lecrae. He proves that can still deliver a powerful message on banging beat.
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." - Romans 12:2
8. "Good, Bad, Ugly" (featuring Kari Jobe)
I love this song because Lecrae gets deep with his listeners. Uncommon to the majority of hip hop songs, "Good, Bad, Ugly" discusses abortion and molestation. Lecrae reveal to us that his role in persuading his then-girlfriend to have an abortion. Afterwards, Lecrae understood he made a mistake as he felt a part of them had died.
9. "Divine Intervention"
At some point life, you may need to have a divine intervention, or you may know someone who needs a divine intervention.
10. "The Fever" (featuring Andy Mineo and Papa San)
Here is a song you probably would want to "turn up" to. "The Fever" has a Jamaican reggae sound, thanks to Papa San. I love it because it is different from most Christian songs
11. "Lost My Way" (featuring King Mez and Daniel Day)
Everybody makes mistakes. Sometimes, we let our shame of the mistakes get the best of us. Sometimes, we lose our way. Even, Christians struggle and have to be reminded why they are suppose to following God. If you have lost your way, don't wait until Judgement Day to be found.
12. "Hallelujah"
Hallelujah is commonly said when a person wants to celebrate what Jesus has done for them. Celebrating on a banging beat is what Lecrae does to show how thankful he is for being saved by Jesus
13. "I'm A Saint"
Similar to other songs on the "Rebel" album, this song is filled with theological lyrics. It gets you pumped and excited about being a believer.
14. "Believe"
In "Believe", Lecrae tackles the issues of his critics' opinions about his songs and music style. Lecrae ask his listeners, "what would it take to for you to believe?"
15. "Hang On"
Lecrae continues the tactic of rapping from a non-Christian perspective and provided an advising response to the concerns. Also, "Hang On" describes how important grandmothers are to young males' Christian faith. In African AMerican culture, the grandmother is, usually, the powerful prayer warriors.
16. "Blow Your High"
While smoking tends to get glamorized by the vast majority, Lecrae and Canon addresses the idea of smoking and deep inner consequences of participating in the habit.
"Your body feeling right but your soul getting left
You think you gettin' high but you really getting low
The devil got you blind from the weed that you blow
You worshippin' a tree instead of worshippin' the king
When he made everything Romans 1:23" - Lecrae
17. "If I Die Tonight" (featuring Novel)
If you were to die tonight, how would you want to be remembered? What would you legacy look like? I love this phenomenal song because Lecrae gets personal about death, his career and his hopes for it after he's done rapping
18. "Nuthin"
"Nuthin" is what most mainstream rappers are talking about, according to Lecrae. Lecrae is calling others to become better musicians by creating better music.
19. "Misconception" (Propaganda, Beautiful Eulogy, and DJ Efechto)
"Misconception" is on my list because of the lyrics. Having Propaganda, who is a powerful spoken word artist, on the song makes me have more love for it
20. "Boasting"
Listening to this song reminds me of Paul's letter in Second Corinthians. Towards the end of chapter 10, Paul instructs on what it means to boast.
(16) so that we can preach the gospel in the regions beyond you. For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else's territory. (17) But, "Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord"
- Second Corinthians 10:16-17
21. "Fakin'" (featuring Thi'sl)
Lecrae and Thi'sl communicates to their audience on the negative outlook of live a fake lifestyle. It may be hard to believe, but there are people who are not impressed with the flashy materialist way of life.
22. "I'm Turnt"
Listening to "I'm Turnt" will give you a new meaning to turning up. It tells Christians that they can have fun and go to parties without the alcohol and drugs.
23. "Tell The World" (featuring Mali Music)
Staying true to a discipleship mindset, Lecrae reminds his listening that he will tell the world about Jesus. Making disciples of the nations (Matthew 28:19) is a hobby that Lecrae is proud of.
24. "Lucky Ones" (featuring Rude Currency)
By now, you may have noticed that "Gravity" is one of my all-time favorite Lecrae albums. Having songs, like "Lucky Ones" and "Tell the World", provides reason for why Lecrae won a Grammy for the album.
25. "Battle Song" (featuring Suzy Rock)
Last but definitely not lease, Lecrae gives us the amazing "Battle Song." While listening to the song, I like to picture myself going into battle with my flesh as this song is playing in the background. It motivates me to wage war with my sins because it is constant battle that I have to keep fighting.
Lecrae has a lot more songs to offer than the ones I have listed. I hope you enjoy these song as much (if not more) than I do. Check out his other songs that I did not mention.
