2016 was the year of the internet.
Memes flooded social media and challenges were being created as fast as they were going viral. We had 100+ layers of nail polish videos on YouTube, and then Pokemon Go on mobile. With the year coming to a close, it is time to take a step back and reflect on everything the internet had to offer this year.
So without any more waiting, let's get into it!
The Condom Challenge
Where you fill up a condom with water and then drop it on someone's head.
The Grey Sweatpants Challenge
This challenge flooded through Twitter as people filled their sweatpants with random objects.
The Running Man Challenge
Started by two University of Maryland basketball players, Jaylen Brantley and Jared Nickens, the challenge is simple: do the running man to an old '90s hit song called "My Boo" by Ghost Town DJ's.
The Water Bottle Flipping Challenge
It's simple: just flip a water bottle. That's it.
The No-Hands Challenge
Twitter strikes again with the challenge of taking a photo without using your hands. Usually ends with a broken phone after it falls to the ground.
The Backpack Challenge
The challenge was created by Twitter user abucciwood and is very similar to the game dodgeball. In order to do the challenge, students line up in rows of two and toss their heavy backpacks at one unlucky challenger, who attempts to get through the attacks without falling over.
The Mannequin Challenge
The Mannequin Challenge is a viral Internet video trend where people remain frozen in action like mannequins while a moving camera films them, usually with the song "Black Beatles" by Rae Sremmurd playing in the background.
Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn swept the nation after Suicide Squad was released. You were lucky enough to go around the block on Halloween without seeing someone dressed up as Harley Quinn.
Harambe
Harambe was killed in May 2016 and has lived on through the memes of the internet. The love for Harambereached as far as the presidential election with over 11,000 votes going to Harambe.
As much as these challenges and memes left the world a funnier place for just a moment, it is safe to say that everything that happened in 2016 should stay in 2016. We will never forget the viral videos that followed with laughter and 2017 holds promise for more trends that make zero sense.
Here's to the internet of 2017!
