Looking Back At The Top 17 Songs Of Summer ‘17
BBC Ice Cream

As school starts and summer comes to a close, it's time to reminisce about the sounds that defined the summer of 2017. While I do include several mainstream songs, like my list from last year, this is NOT a list of top 40 hits. These are also some of my personal favorites, so there’s a chance some of your favorites are left off.

17. Day Two by Lemaitre

This is one of those hidden gems that you love as soon as you hear it. Fun and up tempo, this uplifting song tells listeners to be optimistic and enjoy life.

16. Attention by Charlie Puth

I never thought that a Charlie Puth song would make my list two years in a row. Puth is trying his hardest to resist his ex who wants his attention because he knows she will just break his heart again. It’s a cute little pop hit, providing even more success for the young artist.

15. iSpy by Kyle featuring Lil Yachty

I love Kyle, and I’m glad that he finally reached mainstream success with a song that shows off his goofy side. Lil Yachty is…..bearable in this song.

14. I’m the One by DJ Khaled featuring Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Quavo and Lil Wayne

It’s Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Quavo and Lil Wayne on a beat produced by DJ Khaled; it practically sells itself. DJ Khaled combines Pop and Rap heavyweights to make a laid-back and care free song that both young and older music listeners can appreciate.

13. HUMBLE by Kendrick Lamar

King Kendrick. ‘Nuff said.

12. Bad 4 Us by Superfruit

This is the first single from the duo Superfruit, comprised of the two male lead singers in the acapella group Pentatonix. This song is a prime example of what good pop music sounds like, with a combination of great vocals and dance-y instrumentals.

11. Stay by Zedd with Alessia Cara

Zedd’s production is always great, and this song is no exception. Zedd includes Alessia Cara’s amazing vocals to create an upbeat dance song, complete with a beat drop in the middle of the chorus.

10. Black SpiderMan by Logic featuring Damian Lemar Hudson

A positive and uplifting song, “Black SpiderMan” has Logic rapping about how he’s glad to be a biracial man, and that no one should care about another person’s race, gender or sexuality and should practice spreading peace, love and positivity instead.

9. To the Max by DJ Khaled featuring Drake

I’m mad this track didn’t get as much mainstream success as others on DJ Khaled’s album. This song is catchy and up tempo, taking heavy influence on the Jersey club production style. While Drake’s inclusion is definitely appreciated, it’s the unique production that definitely makes this song great.

8. That’s What I Like by Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars has been going in a funkier, more upbeat direction with his music, and I am 100% here for it. I dance to this song every time I hear it, whether I’m alone in my room or at a party with a couple dozen people watching.

7. Love Galore by SZA featuring Travis Scott

This song was SZA’s introduction to mainstream audiences. SZA uses her smooth and at times haunting vocals to express the frustration she has with the men in her life. Travis Scott’s feature is just the icing on the cake of a great R&B song.

6. Passionfruit by Drake

It’s not a “top songs of the summer” list without a single from Drake. “Passionfruit” is a chill summery song, perfect for listening while laying out in the sun and doing nothing. Drake’s singing ability is on full display, and shows the type of versatility he has as an artist.

(no link here because Drake is greedy and doesn't like putting his music online)

5. Despacito by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee

I’m sorry, but Justin Bieber’s feature ruined this song; the OG is FAR superior. “Despacito” is one of the songs that you can play in any setting and it would fit perfectly, whether you’re at a backyard party, in your car, or chilling with some friends. (fun fact: the music video for "Despacito" is the most watch YouTube video of ALL TIME).

4. Unforgettable by French Montana featuring Swae Lee

This reggae inspired song was made for summer listening. Featuring R&B vocals from Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee, “Unforgettable” is a smooth dance floor track about a guy who meets that one girl at a party he wants to get with.

3. Run Up by Major Lazer featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR and Nicki Minaj

Major Lazer came through with some killer production on song. Inspired by their island roots, Party Next Door and Nicki Minaj brought their A-game on this track, putting their strengths as a vocalist and a rapper, respectively, on full display.

2. This Girl by Kungs vs Cookin' On 3 Burners

This song is just SO fun. A near perfect pop/dance song, “This Girl” includes fantastic beats by producer Kungs, as well as prominent high brass features throughout the song.

1. Slide by Calvin Harris featuring Frank Ocean and Migos

Calvin Harris produced this song with the summer vibe in mind, and it shows through the production. Frank Ocean’s smooth R&B vocals, and Migos fast paced rap features provide the perfect crossover appeal, making this the best song of Summer 2017.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
