Studying bites and sometimes you just need a good long break from staring at that page from your Macro textbook for 20 minutes straight. I feel that, and as a fellow procrastinator, I'll admit that I LIVE for watching underrated kids movies when I'm supposed to be writing a paper. Hopefully, I'm not the only person who does this and you can enjoy this random list I made the next time you need to just not do homework. Here are top 12 most underrated animated non-Disney kids movies:
1) "The Road to El Dorado"
Okay if you haven't seen this movie, you are an idiot. This movie is just an amazing, hilarious adventure of two best friends who travel to the legendary city of gold: El Dorado. The animation is flawless, the script is full of adult jokes, AND they had Elton John as the narrator and the composer, A.K.A. the soundtrack is bomb.
Watch it on Netflix, YouTube, Google Play, Vudu, iTunes, or Amazon video.
2) "Anastasia"
I swear the only reason this movie is underrated is because it isn't a product of Disney. This movie is based on the fall of the Romanov empire from World War 1, in which the entire Romanov family was killed, but there are some theories that a few members of the Romanov family survived; one them being the youngest child Anastasia. But the movie is so much more than a history theory. It is full of lovable characters, unbelievably awesome animation, addicting songs, like UGH you guys, it's SO GOOD!
Watch it on: Netflix, YouTube
3) "The Iron Giant"
OK, so technically I didn't see this movie until college-hood, but I can see why so many people loved this movie growing up. The characters are more complex than you think, the whole story is touching and the script is brilliantly written. It is about a young boy who befriends a giant alien robot (voiced by VIN DIESEL!!!) who crash landed in his small town. It's basically the robot alien version of the BFG, but so much more awesome.
Watch it on Netflix, YouTube, or Amazon Video
4) "The Quest for Camelot"
My favorite thing about this movie is how it destroyed a lot of stereotypes that many other kids movies put out there at the time: the main heroine wasn't helpless or girly. The women in this movie were strong and independent, there was no designated "prince charming" etc. Although you may have to sit through some songs, they aren't half bad either.
5) "Treasure Planet"
Yet, another incredible Disney movie blown under the bridge because of the lack of singing, animal-obsessed princesses. As a futuristic version of the old classic 'Treasure Island' this movie is still astounding with its awesome story line, characters, animation, and top-notch script. I mean you have a troublemaker kid with a thirst for adventure, a hilariously clumsy doctor, a strong and sassy female captain, and literally the best version of a cyborg Long John Silver - there is so much childhood here, 5 stars.
Watch it on: YouTube, or Amazon Video
6) "Flushed Away"
Not gonna lie, this was probably one of the best movies to come out when I was a little Bristol kid in the early 2000's. Ronnie is a London city, posh-tottie rat who accidentally gets flushed away when a sewer rat invades his home after his family goes away on vacation. It is his mission to get back to his old home while battling with the vicious TOADS! (dun dun dunnnn!!!). It was made by the same people who created "Wallace & Gromit" - a hilarious British kids' show duo that not many American kids knew about, but trust me, these productions are so freaking funny -the humor can be applied to all ages.
7) "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron"
This American Western classic is probably one of the best childhood movies of my childhood. I remember my dad buying this movie at an old video store (back in VHS woop! woop!) and I just looked at my dad like he was a crazy old dude for thinking at age 10, I would still be into ponies. This movie is so heart-wrenchingingly watchable. It's a story about a wild stallion born to lead a herd of wild horses who gets captured at an attempt to domesticate him as a working horse. The movie is all about courage, bravery, and not letting your spirit be broken.
8) "Cats Don't Dance"
Another severely underrated kids movie, "Cats Don't Dance" is about a bunch of animals with big-city stardom dreams. While "Cats Don't Dance" appears to be nothing more than a low-rating kids' movie, despite having a legitimately scary villain (it's like seeing a young Dolores Umbridge with cartoon blonde hair) and having some awesome cast talent, Natalie Cole's voice is so ridiculously underrated it shocks me sometimes.
9) "Ferngully"
This is probably one of the best hidden "save the trees" movies there is out there. Crysta, a fairy that lives in "Fern Gully" (a thriving rain forest) discovers and accidentally shrinks a human down to fairy size. The human, Zak, is part of a logging team who accidentally awaken a deadly entity, known as Hexxus, who aims to destroy Earth and everyone on it. This movie has some of the best music (and honestly, the best villain soundtrack aside from "Poor Unfortunate Souls")
10) "An American Tail"
While emigrating to the United States, a young Russian mouse gets separated from his family in the Big Apple, and must try to survive and find them once again. Aside from the very real and dark relation between World War 2 Pre-Holocaust era and this kiddy movie, it was the highest grossing movie of its time.
11) "All Dogs Go To Heaven"
If your preacher tells you your dog won't go to heaven, this movie proves two things: 1) Your dog will go to heaven and 2) you should probably find a new preacher. The movie is about a dog named Charlie who gets killed by his "friend" Carface. Charlie then goes back to Earth from doggy heaven to get revenge on his old bestie.
12) "Ernest & Celestine"
Guys...guys! This movie is so freaking cute! Like I say a lot of things are cute, but this is by far the CUTEST THING I have ever seen. The movie was originally released in France in 2012 and was later translated to English and put on Netflix. The movie revolves around a mouse and a bear who are supposed to be complete enemies of each other. Celestine is a little orphaned mouse who steals teeth from under bear cubs' pillows above ground, since every rodent is meant to study dentistry. On the other hand, Ernest is an anti-social, low-income, starving bear who lives alone and becomes a partner in crime with Celestine. The description sounds weird, but the movie is absolutely adorable and leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart.
