From Jamaican dub to future electronic today's indie acts have to synthesize genres to stay fresh, new, and unique. Here are my picks for new and rising artists of the month.

1) "Lazyboy Empire"

They sound like a smooth, Caribbean-style "Maroon 5."

This indie band surged on the scene last month with their single "Vampire". Combining dub, funk, and pop, this group has certainly set itself apart as being one of the most unique indie pop artists that I've ever heard. Not much can be found about them other than the endearingly bizarre video for "Vampire" released along with the song, but it's caught the attention of music bloggers everywhere while accumulating more than 250k Soundcloud listens in under three weeks. Be warned, it's catchier than the freshman plague.

2) "Lime Cordiale"
They sound like a really hyped up version of "The Kooks."

Describing themselves as "ciggi-butt-brains," this pair of beach bum brothers from Australia have maintained a decent amount of popularity in their home country and they're looking to expand into the indie pop scene in America. "Not That Easy" is their newest release, straying away from their more psychedelic rock sound and journeying toward an incredibly catchy pop-electronic sound with synth-heavy hooks and nods to hard rock in their chorus. If you're missing summer this song will bring you right back to August.

3) "nvdes"
They sound like a drugged up version of "Empire of the Sun" by "Vacationer."

"nvdes" (pronounced "nudes") has been releasing arid, dissonant pop tunes over the last few months. Calling themselves a spin-off band, they're apparently members of a bigger indie pop act although they're shrouded in mystery. Suspiciously, their last few songs have taken off despite being an unknown act. It'll be interesting finding out which famous artist is behind this progressive pop band obsessed with off-color cantaloupes.

4) "The Zolas"
They sound like an even bouncier "Said The Whale."

This Canadian west coast band has a serious crush on the east coast's most famous city. If you love light-hearted indie rock tunes with bouncy rhythms and twangy guitars "The Zolas" are the band for you. Having just released their newest EP "Wino Oracle," "The Zolas" are posed to re-enter the indie music scene with a third album.

5) "The Young Wild"
They sound like a perfect cross between "Fun." and "The Mowgli's."

"Not A One" is the sole release by this brand new four-piece band out of California. "The Young Wild" is a very happy-go-lucky act, and this pop anthem features a strong, foot-stomping beat, a catchy piano riff, and lyrics we can all identify with. So put on your flannel button-downs, grab your pinwheels, and let "The Young Wild" bring out your inner summer-loving teenage self.

6) "Miike Snow"
They don't sound like the old Miike Snow, but this new groovy mix of some Justin Timberlake and "LCD Soundsystem" type sh*t.

"Miike Snow" isn't really underground, but they've more or less fallen out of the pop music spotlight the past three years. Well lead singer Andrew Wyatt has been working with some huge acts lately, including Flume and Mark Ronson, and now "Miike Snow" is back after a number of years with a pretty fresh new sound. This electronic pop single was released a week ago and it's really taken off. With killer sampling, vintage beats, and Wyatt's iconic vocals, "Heart is Full" makes a grand entrance by sounding like a song for a grand entrance. I mean, listen to those trumpets.

7) "Capitale"
They sound like if "Florence and the Machine" was produced by "Flume." Yeah, they're that good.

The perfect bridge between pop and future electronic, "Capitale" has won much admiration by blogs all over the internet. Combining natural-sounding pop vocals provided by Rachel Mahoney and instrumentals produced by Straun Finlay, they've hit their mark as a truly unique electronic indie pop duo. They've even collaborated with the up-and-coming producer Taptone to produce an incredibly catchy dance track. Unfortunately they haven't found their way to Spotify yet, but all three released tracks are available for free download via Soundcloud and Bandcamp.

8) "Mating Ritual"
They sound like "Passion Pit" by "Pacific Air," which makes since because it's the solo project by the lead singer of "Pacific Air."

I'll be honest, this is my personal "I hope this artist takes off this month" pick. Made up of respected indie rock artist Ryan Marshall Lawhon and coming out with singles here and there for the last year, "Mating Ritual" is one of my favorite new indie pop artists. "Mating Ritual" saw some success with his release of "I Wear Glasses" at the end of the summer and so I wouldn't be surprised if a new song were to be released this month. Being very upbeat, "Mating Ritual" makes use of powerful synths and classic rock instruments on top of airy vocals provided by Lawhon himself to create a summer-fling type of ambiance. Chill vibes, man.

9) "EDEN"
They sound like a more electronic "Bastille."

"EDEN" is an Irish singer/producer who's been releasing music for about a year. His pure electronic production matched with his incredible voice has amassed him quite the following. Being deeply emotional, his music tends to resonate within listeners. With his first official EP entitled "End Credits" released on October 12th there's no doubt that "EDEN" will continue to grow in popularity.

10) "Stephen"
They sound like if the "Foo Fighters" were produced by "Sweater Beats," which would never actually happen for as long as Dave Grohl is alive, but now you have "Stephen."

Californian musician "Stephen" was a run-of-the-mill electronic producer two years ago before falling off the grid. Now he's back with a vengeance, releasing music that combines indie rock with garage electronic production. Not only is his music some of the most unique that I've ever heard in terms of style and genre, but he plays and records all the live instruments he uses in his music. From guitars and drums to midis and electronic samples, "Stephen" produces everything by himself while using his own voice as the cherry on top. He has two original tracks he recently released, but I'm choosing to post his incredible cover mash-up of Adele's "Hello" and "Rolling in the Deep." Check out his video for this track.

Here's the continuously updated playlist of all the artists I'll write about now and in the future.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
