Once a year the Greek community of Missouri S&T comes together to compete for the title of Greek Week Champions. In the spirit of the beginning of this special week, I will outline the top 10 things about Greek Week. That being said, look out for the top 10 things that need to be changed about Greek Week which will come after the games are over.
1. Panhel and IFC Reps Don't Go (Entirely) Crazy
A lot of behind the scenes work gets put into Greek Week and we have to thank the Panhel and IFC reps. Granted we do thank them by making them Godz their senior years, but from baby rep to God, everyone is putting in a lot of work.
2. High School Hero's Reflect Their Former Glory
Greek Week at Missouri S&T is where the kids who were good enough go D1 but not good enough to make it to the Pro's get to shine again. These kids knew the safe bet was to make their millions by getting a good degree rather than risk it in D1 sports. Now, I have nothing against D1 sports and you'll find me watching College Game Day and March Madness, but you really start to discover who your brothers and sisters are during Greek Week based on how they contribute to the house.
3. There's a Beer Garden
There's a Beer Garden...enough said.
4. The Greek Community Shines
I remember last year when we opened the games with the National Anthem and the singer forgot the words at one point. The Greek community then came together to help her finish singing the National Anthem. It's the little things that show that even though we are separate houses, we still can come together.
5. Everyone Brings Their House Dogs to Opening and Closing Games
Maybe playing the sports isn't really your thing.... And neither is watching them. That being said, not only is it a giant frat and srat event, it's a giant frat and srat hound event. Let's be honest here, puppies at the puck only happens like twice a semester and you need a puppy love fix ASAP. When all of the houses bring their puppers and woofers, the jury on whether the dogs or the athletes leave more exhausted is still out.
6. There's Something for Everyone
Opening and closing games is very dependent on experience in being an athlete. However, the games throughout the week as well as the participation events, allow everyone to get involved and represent their house.
7. A Lot of Volunteer Work Is Done
Between Greek Day of Service, the Blood Drive, and Linking Hearts, the amount of volunteer work to the community that is accomplished is incredible. The community is very dependent on the Greeks given how successful our volunteer work is every year.
8. We Still Can Party Together
You go to these big schools and they can't party together on a casual Tuesday, but when you come to Missouri S&T, you will find that the entire Greek community will come together to have fun even in the midst of battle. I cannot tell you how many times I have had jaws drop when I tell my friends at other schools that not only do we party together most weekends, we also party together during Greek week.... And it's kind of weird if you don't.
9. We Get to Tailgate
We're not a big school with a great tailgating tradition. So, when we have the opportunity to show off our grills and cooking skills, you best believe everyone is going to show up in a big way. It is awesome to get to look around and see guys of all the houses slaving over the grills so that their more athletic brothers can eat.
10. Pledges Are Inspired to Take Ownership in Their House
Greek Week really gets pledges to feel ownership in the organization they have joined. They will begin to develop the emotional attachment to the house that comes with winning and losing.
