The 1975 is my favorite band. Each of their songs has an individual, unique sound that distinguishes it from the rest, and a deeper meaning within the lyrics. Matty Healy, the singer and main songwriter, has an extraordinary way with words. Here are my top ten lyrics from their songs in no particular order.

1. "Don't fall in love with the moment and think you're in love with the girl."

This lyric is from "She's American." It points out how you shouldn't mistake falling in love with a moment with falling in love with a girl. Sometimes the two can be hard to differentiate from one another.

2. "If I'm lost, then how can I find myself?"

This brilliant lyric is from "If I Believe You," a song about Matty's atheism. The song questions whether his suffering would stop if he began to believe in God. This line presents the paradox of not being able to "find yourself" when you are "lost," as some religious advocates may call you if you are an atheist.

3. "What a shame, you've lost a brain that you never had."

"The Ballad Of Me And My Brain" paints a scene of Matty desperately trying to find his lost brain. This specific lyric alludes to a mental breakdown of sorts while also commenting that the person who lost their mind never had one to begin with.

4. "I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age, but girl I'm not your savior."

In "Girls," Matty sings about a seventeen-year-old girl who is pursuing some sort of relationship with him. The girl wants him to "save" her; she wants him to replace the nonexistent God in her life, however Matty denies being able to do this.

5. "I think you can tell, I haven't been doing too well."

Matty wrote "Nana" in the perspective as if he were singing to his deceased grandmother. You can hear his voice crack ever so slightly as he sings it at the end of the song. The emotion in the delivery of the lyric and the meaning make it stick out to me.

6. "You're cold and I burn, I guess I never learn."

This iconic lyric is from "Settle Down." The contrast between the words "cold" and "burn" is to emphasize the differences between Matty and the girl he is singing about. Despite their crippling differences, he doesn't learn and continues to make the mistake of going back to her every time.

7. "Every time I start to believe in anything you say, I'm reminded that I should be getting over it."

"Somebody Else" will always be my favorite breakup song. This heartbreaking tune tells the tale of Matty's lover leaving him for someone else. When he sings this line, it's extremely relatable in the sense that it's very easy to remain hung up over the person who broke your heart. You'll always have that false hope in your love returning to you, and when you feel this hope consuming you, you're hit with the cruel reminder that you should be getting over them.

8. "You got excited and now you find out that your girl won't even get you undressed, or care about your beating chest."

The upbeat instrumentals of "This Must Be My Dream" betray the actual meaning of the song. Matty falls for a girl and starts to idealize her, hoping that she is going to change his life for he better. This lyric shows that she actually doesn't care about him at all. The feelings are not mutual at all; she doesn't care enough about him to even undress him all the way during sex or care about whether he's alive or not.

9. "I don't wanna be your friend, I wanna kiss your neck."

If you've ever listened to an unrequited love playlist on 8tracks or Spotify, you're going to find "Fallingforyou" on there without a doubt. This lyric is perhaps one of the most popular lines from any of their songs. It's simple—it highlights the urge to want to take things past the platonic stage with someone you have feelings for.

10. "I love you, don't you mind?"

Throughout "Me," Matty repeats the same phrase: "Don't you mind?" He sings it after he lists a variety of things that he has done, like nearly killing someone and thinking about killing himself. I view the song as his desperate pleas to care about him. Finally, he states that he loves this person. Does this love matter to them at all?

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
