Sports have always been apart of my life. It's something I want to turn into a potential career. Although I've only been on this earth for a short while, there have been some awesome sports moments that are special and most memorable to me. These are in no particular order.
1) Game Six of the 2010 ALCS
In the Texas Rangers 44 years of existence, they have only been to two World Series. The second one is still too hard to think about (Game six of the 2011 World Series hurts a lot). But you never ever forget the first. But to get there they had to beat a hot wild card Yankee team in the American League Championship Series. The Rangers had a 3-2 series lead heading into game six. They played some of their best baseball of the year. The Rangers out scored the Yankees 38-19 in the six game series and had 63 hits to New York's 38. Overall it was a dominating performance but my favorite memory of that game was the last out. Neftali Feliz came out to close and he struck out former Ranger, Alex Rodriguez (which was sweet since he left the team to make stupid money). that last strike out sent the Texas Rangers to the World Series for the first time in franchise history. Although they would lose in five games, that ALCS was always special because it was our first World Series birth and plus striking out A-Rod is always sweet.
2. Why Not Us? Boston Red Sox have the Greatest comeback ever.
Down 3-0 in the ALCS series against who else than bitter arch rival New York Yankees. After getting blown out 19-8 in game three something happened in Boston. Boston wins game four in 12 innings and then in game five win in 14 innings. Now the series was 3-2 heading back to New York. Boston wasn't done yet they took game six 4-2 to force a decisive game seven. (side note Boston and New York went to a game seven in the previous year's ALCS and the Yankee's won on a walk-off home run) Boston would then close out the series 10-3 and gained a World Series birth where they then swept the St. Louis Cardinals four games to none, to win their first World Series in 86 years. (1918) They became the first team in MLB history to win a series despite being down in a post season series 3-0. It was just an incredible comeback. And incredible to root for a team desperate for a World Series.
3) 2007 Fiesta Bowl
Some team from Idaho beats the Big 12 power Oklahoma. Down 35-28, Boise State was facing a 4th and long and they ran a hook in ladder play where the receiver catches the ball and tosses it back to another one of his teammates. This play tied it up after the PAT forcing an overtime. OU scored and kicked the PAT to go up 42-35. But when Boise had the ball they score to make it 42-41. They choose to go for two and ran one of the more legendary plays of the era, "The Statue of Liberty" which was a fake pass hand-off in which Boise scored on to win the game. And what was even better was the running back who scored the go ahead 2-point conversion, went to where the cheerleaders were and he proposed to his girlfriend right then in there. Who doesn't like an underdog story? Got the win and got the girl.
4) Rougned Odor punches Jose Bautista
Now this is probably the most recent thing on my list. This fight felt like my generation's Nolan Ryan and Robin Ventura brawl. Let me preface this fight. Bautista hit a 3-run homer against the Rangers in the ALDS last year (2015) which knocked the Rangers out of the playoffs I might add. But after he hit it he did an arrogant bat flip, throwing his bat in celebration. This caused both benches to clear although no fight actually happened. Fast forward to 2016 and Ranger's pitcher Matt Bush hit Bautista with a pitch giving him a free base. on the next batter, the batter hit it to short stop and he threw it to second base and Rougned Odor tried to throw it to first to get the double play but was interfered with Bautista sliding late and into Odor's legs. Words were spoken, Odor shoved Bautista, Bautista tried to throw a punch but Odor blocked it and hit Bautista with a mean right hook. Bench clearing brawl broke out resulting in several ejections. And a few days later several players were suspended for a couple of games. This was just awesome. Baseball tends to police itself and this felt like bitter sweet justice.
5) Vince Young Beats USC for the National Championship
The University of Texas trailed USC 38-26 with 6:42 left to play. Vince Young accounted for all 69 yards of the drive including a 17 yard touchdown run. After the extra point Texas was only down five points. Next defensive series Texas managed to get a crucial 4th down stop to get the ball back (USC just needed a first down to continue winding down the clock). Texas kept finding ways to convert the first down despite being in long distance situations They capped off the drive with who else a Vince Young touchdown run. It was one of the single greatest performances I've ever seen. It was the first National Championship that I actually really watched and really followed through. Stayed up all night watching it with my older brother and we were living an apartment then so we had to be quiet.(rest of the family had gone to bed) There should be an award for quietest high five and cheering. Still to this day one of my top National Championships games I've ever watched.
6) Dallas Mavericks 2011 Title run
The 2010-2011 Dallas Mavericks were NBA champions. Against all odds. They came out of the west as the third best team. In the first round they beat the Portland Trailblazers in six games. In the Conference semi's they played and swept the Lakers who in the previous season had knocked the Mavs out of the playoffs. In the Western Conference Finals the Mavs faced the Oklahoma City Thunder where they one in five games. In the NBA finals they would face the Miami Heat. To me it felt like a rematch from the 2006 NBA finals where the referees, I mean the Miami Heat came back and beat the Mavs. What was even better is the summer before LeBron James had his infamous "The Decision" (that hour long TV special about where he would play next) where he chose to "take his talents to South Beach." He went down there to team up with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.To many experts this "Big Three" was the formula for an NBA title; tell that to the Dallas Mavericks. The Dallas Mavericks would win the NBA Finals in six games, completely thwarting LeBron's hopes for his his first championship. (He would win two eventually) First ever championships are always special especially when you beat the best player in the NBA with a much more shall we say seasoned veteran team. And lets be honest it's hard to not like Dirk Nowitzki who was named finals MVP.
7) Nova Beats UNC for the National Championship
The 2015-2016 NCAA tournament was nuts. Every game was unpredictable and it was by far one of the best tournaments I had ever seen. But when Marcus Paige hit this shot, I thought the excitement would continue in overtime. (He hit that shot to tie the game which was the cap off of a comeback being down by ten.
But then Villanova's, Kris Jenkins hit this three pointer with 0.5 seconds on the clock to win the game for Villanova. I was working the bar that night and we were all stunned. one of the best finishes I've ever seen in college hoops.
8) WrestleMania 28: Hell in a Cell (Undertaker Vs Triple H with guest referee Shawn Michaels
First of all I don't care that you think wrestling is fake, it's still awesome. And the stuff these men and women do still makes me feel like I'm nine again just in awe. Anyways WrestleMania 28 (2012) was absolutely awesome. The main even had Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson pitted against WWE John Cena. Now that match was awesome but the real main event to me was the Undertaker vs Triple H in a Hell in a Cell match. The match it self lasted nearly 40 minutes. Both men kept beating the crap out of each other with weapons and their fists. No one would concede defeat. The Undertaker would eventually win but after the match, Triple H, The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels helped each other out of the ring and off. To be that was just a bright light in sportsmanship. And the fact that I was watching it with my teammates made it that much more special. We all were in awe. We were all back to being nine years old again watching these modern day gladiators duke it out till the bitter end.
9) Kick Six
Auburn had tied up the 2013 Iron Bowl (Rivalry game between Auburn and Alabama) 28–28 with 32 seconds remaining. Alabama got a few plays in to get into field goal range and to take down the clock. But with one second remaining in regulation, Alabama's 57-yard field goal attempt falls short and into the waiting hands of Auburn's Chris Davis caught the shanked kick and returned it 100 yards (under NCAA rules) to the opposite end zone, scoring a touchdown allowing Auburn to upset number one ranked Alabama. Craziest play I've ever seen in football and probably will be for many years to come.
10) Carli Lloyd's hat trick in the 2015 World Cup Final.
"This team taught all America's children that "playing like a girl" means you're a badass." Said President Obama. The US Women's National Team dominated in the World Cup final against Japan. I mean it was over in practically 16 minutes. Carli Lloyd scored goals in the 3rd minute, the fifth minute and then midfielder Lauren Holiday scored in the 14th minute shortly followed by Carli Lloyd finishing her hat trick with a goal in the 16th minute. So to recap the USWNT was up 4-0 by the 16th minute in the World Cup final. Japan would evenually score two goals of their own (followed by another USWNT goal by Tobin Heath), and Team USA would win the World Cup 5-2. But Carli Lloyd's dominating performance was just superb. Soccer is on the rise in the United States people are getting more and more into it. Each international victory puts us closer and closer to the levels of the rest of the world. Carli Lloyd perhaps without even realizing it has become an ambassador for US soccer to the US. What a beautiful game.
