I am now a senior in college at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. My college experience at times has been amazing but their are times when it's been very depressing. We are at a very tough time in this country. Violence instead of peace has taking over and feels like the devil keeps knocking at the door. In the past year I have experienced four deaths of fellow students at my university because of pointless and reckless violence. I recently lost my one of my good friends that I considered a brother because of the senseless violence going on. Not just at Morgan State but many universities across the country have experienced violence and deaths on their campuses. Getting an education is very important but being safe while you are away from family is a must. Here are ten safety tips for college students.
1. Never Walk Alone At Night.
Walking by yourself at night can be very dangerous. You never know who is watching and you are in a vulnerable situation. Whether you going to a party or just a quick run to the store always have a buddy with you. The more people the better honestly. If something does happen you have your squad to fall back on. Watch your front and watch your back.
2. If You See Something, Say Something!
My generation has used the excuse " snitches get stitches" entirely too much. Not saying anything has caused lives to be taken away because we are scared of the repercussions. If you see something or somebody up too no good, don't be quiet, tell the officers and security on your campuses. You are now allowed to be an anonymous witness when you give information to authorities. So nobody will never you said something if that makes you comfortable.
3. Stay Alert, Your Phone Can Wait.
Whether you are walking or driving around campus, stay alert of your surroundings at all times. College students have a habit of making their cellular devices their number one priority. Are eyes and hands seemed to glued to the screen 24/7 nowadays. But when traveling to a destination, take a break from that text, tweet or snap and get home safe.
4. Avoid Inebriation!
Lets be real, whether you want to admit it or not we have all had a night where we've been too " turned up". College is a place where young adults are going to explore but we seemed to explore irresponsibly. But make sure you are not drinking irresponsibly to the point you have no self-control and leave yourself vulnerable. It is way too easy for people to take advantage of you, so think and act accordingly.
5. Always Have An Emergency Contact
You never know what could happen but if something does go wrong you should know who to contact. Their are campus police and security working around the clock to make sure you are safe. Make sure you have the correct number and know where to locate the nearest police station on campus. If things have really escalated call your local police and emergency services.
