A Cup of Jo

Every college students loves a good, cheap meal that’s close to campus. After two weeks of eating out and testing the nearby restaurants in Omaha, I have compiled a list for the best places to eat for college students around UNO’s campus.

1. Gandolfo’s Deli

Located on 67th and Center streets, this NY deli style restaurant is cheap and delicious. They have an array of choices that will never disappoint. Their signature item is the hero bread all sandwiches are served on.

2. Petrow’s Restaurant

Located on the corner of 60th and Center streets, this traditional restaurant is a great place for families and large groups. They’re prices are unbeatable for a sit down restaurant and best of all, they accept Mav cards. They also feature a brand new outdoor patio with two huge televisions, ideal for pre-gaming for Baxter Arena events.

3. Dickey’s BBQ

This new restaurant is in Aksarben. They’re prices are a little high for an individual meal, but the bbq is delicious. They also have a long list of sides that go great with the meals.

4. Raising Cane’s

Omaha went nuts when we finally got Raising Cane’s. If you had a friend who lived in Lincoln, that’s all they would brag about. Well, now we have one and it’s super close to campus. There is a location on 72nd and Dodge streets. This is just some great chicken.

5. Jasons’ Deli

Also located off 72nd and Dodge streets (in the same plaza as Cane’s) this deli is fresh and reasonably priced. Need it to go? You can order online and pick it up at the store. They also accept Mav cards.

6. Noodles and Co.

Love pasta? Then this is the perfect place. Located off 72nd and Dodge, Noodles and company has some great, carb filled meals. They also accept Mav cards.

7. Wing Stop

Who can resist wings? Wing stop, located off 72nd and Pacific streets is a cheap place to stop for some wings. They offer bone-in and boneless wings.

8. Juice Stop

If you’re looking for a quick snack or even a meal replacement, Juice Stop is perfect. They offer 24-ounce smoothies for only $5. You can add ingredients or pick from over 20 described creations. Located in the heart of Aksarben.

9. El Basha

If you want some great Mediterranean food, stop by here. Located off 74th and Pacific streets, El Basha offers some traditional, fresh food that will have you crawling back. They have pretty reasonable prices as well. They also have an outdoor patio that you can enjoy your meal and smoke hookah.

10. Pie Five

New to the area, Pie Five is almost set up like Subway. You go in and create your own pizza. Add whatever toppings and sauces you want. They also have a great rewards program with free pizza on your half and actual birthdays. Located on 72nd and Pacific Streets.

Those are my findings for best places to eat around UNO. There are many more, but these were my top ten based on location, quality and price. Go try some of them out!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
