Paper Mario is a series so deep that it requires two articles to accurately describe just the 10 best chapters. Okay, maybe not, but the series is great and this list is finally starting to get to the best of the best.
I will preface the final five with a couple warnings. This list is completely biased to my own personal opinions and nothing more. The other is that many argue that my number one and number three should be switched. I will say that this is my list, and I am the one writing the article. If anyone has a different opinion, do what I did and write an article.
5. Super Paper Mario: Chapter 8: Castle Bleck
While many people write off this chapter as a generic “end-of-game” cliche, I completely disagree. This chapter is full of story, plot twists and awesome boss fights.
Every chapter segment pits you against one of the main baddies Mario has faced since the beginning of his adventure. To add on to this, each boss fight must be fought with only a specific character (except the final bosses).
The other reason this chapter is so good, is the actual adventure. Going through Castle Bleck incorporates pretty much everything the player has learned throughout the game and pretty much every character’s unique abilities.
While I won’t spoil the end of the game, I will say that the ending came out of nowhere and was amazing.
4. Super Paper Mario: Chapter 3: The Bit Lands
Anyone who has played this chapter knows exactly why it is this high on the list. Its aesthetics are in mostly 8-bit form. While they are extremely pleasing, it isn’t the best part of the chapter.
Each segment is completely different than the one before it, but all fit the theme that the chapter presents.
The best part of the chapter is just before the boss fight against the nerdy chameleon Francis. He essentially goes through a dating simulator with Peach. While it has nothing to do with the final boss fight or the actual story in any way, this little bit of comic relief is most people’s favorite part of Super Paper Mario. I will admit, it is mine.
3. Paper Mario TTYD: Chapter 4: For Pigs The Bells Tolls
Here is where I am going to get a lot of flack. This is many people’s favorite part of the game. I love it a ton, but to me, it isn’t even the best part of this game.
This chapter has a really creepy tone to it being fairly Halloween themed, but for some reason, it has a less serious than creepy vibe.
The main reason why people, myself included, love this chapter is the main boss Doopliss. His first fight comes after a few fairly simple puzzles. During the fight, Doopliss copies Mario’s body and the fight continues. After he is defeated, Mario leaves, but the screen doesn’t change. After a few seconds, the shadow that was Doopliss in the fight is now Mario and they have swapped bodies.
The plot of the chapter is about helping Mario get his original body back. It is actually fairly fun and humorous how the player is actually supposed to do it. I won’t spoil it completely though.
While do love this chapter, I hate one aspect for it which causes it to not make it to the top. That is the backtracking. I personally hate backtracking in any video game. This chapter makes the player go back and forth over and over throughout the area. Take away the backtracking and this chapter is near perfect.
2. Paper Mario TTYD: Chapter 6: Three Days of Excess
This chapter had the promise of being an easy ride to the Crystal Star. What it turned out to be a mystery-filled train ride with ghosts, stolen property, possible explosives and living monster-like creatures that eat all the trains passengers … yeah, sounds like a good train ride.
In all seriousness, this chapter is a ton of fun that I can’t really knock at all. I mean, when the player gets to solve mysteries with a penguin that is extremely full of himself and keeps calling Mario "Luigi," then that is a great start to any chapter.
The biggest thing that goes with this chapter is that it is just genuinely fun. I can’t quite describe it. It is something that is hard to replicate, but fun to play over and over and over again.
1. Paper Mario TTYD: Chapter 3: Of Glitz and Glory
Along with many others, this is my favorite part of any Paper Mario game. The Glitz Pit is fun, thrilling and downright amazing.
It is loosely based on the WWE where it is a fighting arena and the top fighter holds the championship belt. That champion, when Mario first arrives, is Rawk Hawk.
Who is Rawk Hawk? Take Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and mix him with Tweety Bird and add a splash of the Unexpected John Cena Meme and Rock Hawk is born. In my opinion, Rawk Hawk is the best character in the entire Paper Mario Series. I am in fact writing this section of the article while listening to his amazing theme song.
What makes this chapter truly amazing though is the story behind it. Along with fighting to become the champion, Mario gets pulled into doing some spy work behind the scenes to figure out the mystery of all the disappearing fighters. This leads to the true final boss of this chapter that took me by surprise and made me truly want to defeat him.
While I could talk for hours about this chapter, the people who have played it already know, and hopefully agree with me, and the people who haven’t played it should be so interested in it that I don’t want to spoil it completely. This chapter alone is almost worth getting the game.
The Paper Mario series may have taken a serious downfall after SPM, but the first three-game still live on in the hearts of gamers everywhere. I know that my opinions do not reflect the general populous, but this is how I feel about the series as a whole.
Now, I feel like replaying TTYD. Just for old times sake.
