Top 10 Movies Ever Made

Have you ever had that experience of leaving the movie and seriously contemplating turning around and seeing the film again? I know I have many times. No matter what it is, something about your favorite movie stuck out to you. Well, if you're a die-hard movie fan or just looking for something to watch this weekend, I couldn't recommend these more.

10. "The Wrestler" and "Black Swan"

I know what your thinking. Here he goes, breaking the rules of a top 10 right off the bat. And yes, I am naming two movies for one slot, but it's with good reason. While a movie about a down-and-out wrestler seems to have little to do with an up-and-coming ballerina, cinematic mastermind Darren Aronofsky originally intended for the two to be one movie. He ultimately split the concepts into 2 films due to how difficult it was to combine those worlds. But, hey, we get more cinema out of it.

I highly recommend watching both together as a double feature.

9. "Across the Universe"

I'm not going to lie, I was only introduced to this movie a couple weeks ago. So, for it to make my top 10 after such a short time is a testament to how great this movie is. The makers of "Burlesque" and "Moulin Rouge" bring you a musical journey to the 1960s. It uses only covers of Beatles songs, but you almost won't recognize them (in a good way). Everything about this movie creates a wonderfully accurate portrait of life in the 1960s.

(It's on Netflix, by the way.)

8. "School of Rock"

This movie is just plain fun. I don't think I've found a movie that was so funny, even after all these years than "School of Rock." It's the kind of movie that my brother, Micah, and I can quote entirely without script or flaw. Great for a laugh.

7. "Titan AE"

I was introduced to the vastly underrated "Titan AE" by my Uncle Andy. At camp, my brothers and I would often take refuge in his RV to watch this movie. Set in the distant future where earth is gone and humanity struggles for life, one man goes on a galactic quest for a new planet. It has amazing visuals, great animation, and a pretty solid plot.

6. "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

No movie list is complete without a little bit of Audrey Hepburn. Tackling tough issues like organized crime and sexual morality, this is a truly wonderful character study. This is a timeless classic that deserves to be watched by both movie buffs and casuals alike. Not to mention how the final scene is so classic Hollywood that it'll make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

5. "Whiplash"

As a future music educator, I feel it would be a disservice for me to not include this masterpiece. Whether you like it or not, this movie makes some serious commentary about the music industry as a whole, especially as it pertains to those of us in school for music. It's not very uplifting, but if you're looking for some great jazz and almost no unnecessary romantic sub-plot, this is your movie.

4. "Jurassic Park"

The dinosaur film that started it all, this film is a total marvel. It has a fantastic score, great characters, and visual effects that still hold up with today's movies. This film has aged wonderfully, and I can only see it getting better with time.

3. "Rocky"

I've raved about "Rocky" in my 5 Memorable Film Scores list, but I didn't quite express how much I love this movie. Who knew that Sylvester Stallone could write, direct and star in a film that would go on to win the Oscar for Best Picture? In all, it's a quaint little film about endurance and love with an ending you'll never forget.

2. "The Dark Knight"

What can I say about this movie? The piece-de-resistance of Christopher Nolan's career, this film is a rollercoaster of emotions and plot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. If you haven't seen it already, watch this movie.

1. "The Artist"

Here it is. My favorite movie of all time. Made in 2011 but filmed entirely in black-and-white and almost entirely silent, this film pays homage to the silent era of the 1920s. Focusing on a silent actor who refuses to follow the "talkie" trend, "The Artist" is a heartwarming and, at times, heartbreaking story of love, loss and fame.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
