The 10 Most "New Jersey" Things Ever

I never realized how "New Jersey" I was until I came to school in Delaware. Even though we might do things a little bit differently, I'm proud to be a New Jerseyan.

1. Arguments about breakfast meat

Nowhere else will you find a state so divided on what to call its breakfast meat. Regardless of whether you say pork roll or Taylor ham, it still tastes amazing and with egg and cheese on a bagel, it is a staple for any native New Jerseyan.

2. Proving that our pizza and bagels are the best

If you've ever been to New Jersey you probably agree with this. Our pizza and bagels do rival with New York, but 90% of people that live in New Jersey are actually originally from New York so that's probably why. There's honestly nothing like a hot slice of pizza or a warm freshly baked bagel in NJ. They're absolutely the best two foods ever created.

3. The necessity of a 24-hour (or at least late night) diner.

This is not a want, but a need. Before coming to school in Delaware, I never realized that 24 hour diners were not a universal concept. Nothing here compares to being able to get pancakes, french fries, and egg creams at any hour of the day or night.

4. "We pump fists, not gas."

This is the truest statement known to man. Please don't ask me to pump my own gas because I do not know, nor do I want to know, how to.

5. Referring to New York as "the city"

Even if you live two hours away from New York, it's still "the city." Philly is never "the city" even if you live 10 minutes away.

6. Going to the shore

The Jersey Shore is the absolute best place to be over the summer, no question.

7. Claiming that central Jersey does, in fact, exist

It does exist, I live there. There is legitimately no other way to describe my location in New Jersey. I'm not North, I'm not South, I am Central.

8. Wawa is a way of life.

This doesn't even need an explanation.

9. Mischief Night

This is another thing I thought was universal. Apparently every state doesn't celebrate the night before Halloween by teepeeing and egging houses. Who knew?

10. Both New York NFL teams actually play in New Jersey!

This is our claim to fame. It's really upsetting when people hate on New Jersey for not having an NFL team when in reality we have two of them, New York just puts its name on them. Both the Giants and the Jets play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
