The Top 10 Mika Songs That Will Make You Appreciate His Artistry

In This Article:

Mika is an artist who has released a total of five studio albums. His latest, "My Name Is Michael Holbrook," was released earlier this month. Even though he came out as gay in 2012, Mika has always incorporated LGBTQ themes in his work. He has become known for writing deep, sometimes dark, lyrics combined with a joyful musical backdrop.

If you are unfamiliar with Mika, here are ten songs to help you appreciate his artistry.

10. Rio

This song has everything you could want in a pop song. The chorus is catchy and is sure to get stuck in your head. There's even a depth to the lyrics that tell you it's about much more than wanting to escape. This juxtaposition has become Mika's signature.

9. Sanremo

Another song about the need to escape, however the video helps add even more depth. Taking place back when homosexuality was illegal, this video continues Mika's tradition of incorporating LGBTQ themes in his work. This track is from his new album, "My Name Is Michael Holbrook."

8. Talk About You

This track is pure pop bliss. If anyone has ever experienced an intense infatuation, you will understand this song.

7. Stardust

There's a bittersweetness about this song. Taken from his 2012 album, "The Origin of Love," this song somehow manages to capture both the joy and heartbreak that comes with love.

6. Billy Brown

This is a big, bold statement to make, especially when it's on your debut album. This cheery track tells the story of a closeted gay man who leaves his wife and family for another man. The most important thing about this song, however, is the understanding Mika has towards his subject.

5. Step With Me

A simple song in its lyrics, yet euphoric in its production. Another track of 2012's "The Origin of Love," this song is beautiful in its romance.

4. Underwater

The yearning in this song is undeniable and once again, Mika proves his gift for melody.

3. Toy Boy

A song from Mika's sophomore album, "The Boy Who Knew Too Much," this song continues the LGBTQ theme. The lyrics talk about a young gay boy who suffers abuse, yet the music sounds straight out of a Disney soundtrack.

2. Happy Ending

This song talks about suffering heartbreak, but the music and melody are so pretty. If you can relate to the lyrics, the music will definitely be healing.

1. Grace Kelly

Mika's first single was quite the statement. This song is an anthem of sorts for outsiders. It feels like a song of defiance and nonconformity. Once again, its catchiness is the icing on the cake.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.
