Top 10 Summer Reads

Summer time is one of the greatest seasons, it brings nice weather, relaxation and lots of free time. Especially after surviving my first year of college, rest and relaxation is greatly needed. College involves A LOT of reading, whether its textbooks or novels, it seems like you’re reading millions of pages in a week. For many people, school burns them out when it comes from reading, but not for me. Instead of developing a strong dislike for books, I revert back to reading some of my favorite teen fiction. It is most definitely my guilty pleasure. Even though I know the plot and the characters, these books never get old. Plus, they’re easy reads that don’t require intense attention. And there’s always the added bonus at the convenient escape from the real world.

Here’s a list of some my favorite authors and books from high school that I LOVE to re-read:

The Hunger Games Series bySuzanne Collins

These books come with the added bonus of having movies to watch after reading. But there’s nothing more entertaining than reading about a horrific society in which children kill one another. But hey there’s Peeta and Gale, a love triangle that tears the heart apart.

All 12 amazing novels by Sarah Dessen

Every one of Sarah Dessen’s novels taught a lesson. Whether it was to open yourself up to new relationship with a guy, trust in your friends, or learning how one deserves to be treated, Dessen’s novels were always relatable.

The writing guru of multiple series by Simone Elkeles

Simone Elkeles series are your typical teen romance. While they are a little unrealistic at times, they are pretty funny and cute. My favorite series was the Perfect Chemistry, because it follows a family of three brothers and alternates between both of the main characters perspective.

The Hush, Hush Saga by Becca Fitzpatrick

Now I’m not one for the whole supernatural/mystical type books (especially after Twilight), but this series blew my mind. It’s the perfect mix of fallen angels, romance, and amusing frienships.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Another book on the list with the added bonus of a movie! Gone Girl is a psychological mystery thriller that keeps you on the edge of your sit. It is most definitely an ending that you don’t see coming. And as always the book is way better than the movie! Gillian Flynn has also written two other thrillers that are page turners.

The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins

I read this book so quickly because it was SO good that I had to re-read as soon as I finished it. It is another psychological mystery thriller that keeps you guessing. The characters are intriguing and there’s plenty of plot twists.

The Confessions of a Shopaholic Series by Sophie Kinsella

Reading these books make me want to pack up and move to England. The main character Rebecca Bloomwood, represents all the crazy and hysterical things all women do. This series is equal parts funny, romance and shopping. Also Sophie Kinsella writes many other stand-alone novels that are perfect for a day of reading outside.

The master of emotional and realistic novels Jodi Picoult

Warning: these books are definitely of a more serious and mature nature, but they are some of the best novels I have ever read. They aren’t as simple of a read as some of the other books on the list, but they are well worth the time. These books are some of the most thought provoking fictional novels.

Only the most romantic novels of all time by Nicholas Sparks

Nicholas Sparks is obviously doing something right by the sheer number of movies based off of his novels. Now if you think the movies were great, just wait till you read the books. All of his books are full of life lessons and love that make you wish you could live the life of the girl in the book.

Happy reading!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
