This past weekend, Disney had a four day long marathon of DCOMs, or Disney Channel Original Movies, in honor of the hundredth DCOM being released. As a millennial, I was so excited for this marathon because I would be home for it and these are the movies I grew up watching on TV. Also, I absolutely love to reminisce, and this marathon brought back so many memories. I do have my personal favorites that I think everyone needs to watch. These are my top 10 DCOMs that I recommend to all of you.
1. "Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century" (1999)
This is hands down my favorite DCOM. I mean, Zenon is such a cool name, she gets to live on Earth and in space, and she has the coolest lingo?! Zetus lapetus, this movie was amazing. And who could ever forget the song "Zoom" by Proto Zoa?
2. "Smart House" (1999)
"Jump, jump, the house is jumpin!" This was probably one of the most iconic DCOMs ever. Who could forget about Pat, the technological house turned '50s housewife, that tried to cause a tornado within the house? This DCOM had me wishing that my own house could do my chores, cook me food, and project music videos on my wall. Plus, you gotta admit that song "C'est La Vie" was a great addition to the movie.
3. "Gotta Kick it Up!" (2002)
Not gonna lie, this is one of the underrated DCOMs out there. It has a great message, and I love movies that include dancing, so I'm a sucker for this one. I absolutely love how this DCOM shows that no matter what obstacles are in your way, you are able to overcome it with the help of people you can rely on.
4. "Geek Charming" (2011)
Aw man, I love this movie. A popular girl and a film geek pair up and end up winning more than just a documentary contest. I didn't think I was gonna get emotional during this movie, but it ends up being more relatable than you think, especially if you've ever felt like you've had to hide your true self at any point in your life.
5. "Cadet Kelly" (2002)
Lowkey, I kinda wanted to go to military school at one point after watching this movie ... then I gave myself a reality check and realized this movie wasn't realistic. Anyway, this is one of my favorite Hilary Duff movies hands down. It was funny, yet serious, and I always wanted to learn how to do that routine they did towards the end of the movie.
6-8. "The Cheetah Girls Trilogy" (2003, 2006, 2008)
How could my list be complete without at least one of these movies? Personally, I didn't think the third movie was that great because Raven was missing, but nonetheless, these movies taught me just how amazing your true friends can be. Also, no matter what, your girls will always have your back. Plus, I feel like Beyonce's lyric about hot sauce in her bag was inspired by Aqua carrying some in her purse (I'm totally kidding).
9-10. "High School Musical" and "High School Musical 2" (2006, 2007)
These two movies were literally my childhood, and were probably the most successful DCOMs out there. I'll forever remember the lyrics to all the songs, and the dance to "We're All in This Together" thanks to the Friday nights spent singing and dancing along to the karaoke or dance versions of the movies.
