I don't know if it's because I'm officially in the adult world now so I've been feeling nostalgic; but I've been watching old Disney Channel movies from when I was growing up every night before bed. Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOM's) are not how they used to be. In the 1990's and early 2000's, some of the movies brought up different life perspectives. They didn't have to worry about "would this offend anyone." There were some good movies. There were some just for entertainment, but Disney just isn't the same anymore. Here are my top 10 favorite DCOM's.
1. The Color of Friendship
Based in the year 1977, the movie follows African American girl, Piper, who lives in DC with her congressman father who is an outspoken opponent of the South African racial segregation system and the oppression of black South Africans. Piper and her family take in Mahree Bok, a white foreign exchange student from South Africa who has a policeman father. At first they struggle to see eye-to-eye but eventually understand their differences and take it as a learning experience.
2. Tiger Cruise
A young girl named Maddie goes on a week long trip called "Operation Tiger" aboard a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier in which her father is the commander on. It is a way for children and siblings to be able to see their loved ones at work when they're overseas. While on board, the 9/11 attacks occur and the vessel is set on high alert.3. Tru Confessions
Follows Tru and her mentally handicapped brother Eddie (Shia Labeouf) as she documents his life and the day-to-day struggles he faces with his illness. She puts it into a film festival where it is shown on national television.
4. Motorcrossed
Although motocross is known to be a “boy sport,“ Andrea Carson loves it, even though her father disagrees with her love for it. Her twin brother, Andrew, dislocates his knee right before a big race and their father travels to Europe alone to find a replacement rider. During the time being, Andrea secretly races in Andrew's place going by the name of “Andy” with the help of her mother. It’s has been known to be one of the biggest woman-empowering DCOMs.
5. Brink!
Andy "Brink" Brinker is a “Soul-Skater” along with his 3 closest friends. Their biggest rivals are Team X-Bladz who are a sponsored team who Brink thinks they only skate for the money and not for the passion of the sport. When Brink’s family starts to crumble due to the loss of his fathers job, Brink decides to team up with X-Bladz secretly, but then is forced to choose between them and his friends.
6. Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century
Set in the year 2049, Zenon is a 13-year-old girl who is driven, outspoken, and loves space. She lives on a space station with her scientist parents. When she gets into some trouble, Commander Plank sends Zenon to Earth to live with her Aunt. While on Earth, she discovers that her family and friends are in danger on the space station due to the evil Wyndham and Lutz. She makes it her mission to get back to space and save everyone on board.
7. Rip Girls
Sydney is a 13-year-old girl who revisits her homeland of Hawaii. Her and her father moved away after her mother's death. While on the island, she discovers who her mother was, and finds out more about her past with the ocean and the island riches.
8. Right on Track
Based on a true story, follows two teenage sisters, Courtney and Erica Enders, who are in junior drag racing despite the odds of it being a “man's sport.” Erica is known to be the best racer and finds herself struggling with school, social life, and drag racing as well as being a role model for younger girls.
9. You Wish!
The phrase “be careful what you wish for” is exactly what this movie is all about. It follows a teenage boy, Alex, and his annoying little brother Stevie. One day Alex wishes on a coin that Stevie never existed and wakes up to find himself in a completely different universe without Stevie as his little brother, as well as different friends at school.
