Rivalries are what make sports so enjoyable. When your team plays their bitter rival, it amps up the stakes even higher. In the NFL today, there are a plethora of rivalry matchups, here are the top 10 rivalries in the NFL today.
This list does not simply focus on rivalries due to geography or long history. Instead it focuses on all aspects of big time rivalry games. These are the match-ups that have fans getting ready a week in advance, sometimes even skipping work in order to have more time to prepare. Just thinking about these match-ups is getting me excited to watch some NFL football.
10. San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks
This rivalry has lost some of its major luster due to the mass exodus of players and coaches from San Fran. However, the disdain is clear from the first snap of the ball. Each teams knows they cannot lose this match-up or face the wrath of the fans.
9. New England Patriots vs. the NFL Rulebook
This is a two-part rivalry. On the one hand, New England has such a weak division that they have not formed a true rivalry with any of them. On the other hand it is well documented that the Patriots will take any advantage they can get, even if it is against the rules.
8. Baltimore Ravens vs. Cleveland Browns
This rivalry comes from the fact that the Ravens used to be the Browns. Art Modell infamously moved the Browns out of Cleveland in the 1990s and since then, the Browns hold a true hatred for their old franchise.
7. Browns vs. Winning
The Browns have clinched their eighth consecutive losing season and have not made the playoffs since 2002. At this point, it is actually harder to be this consistently bad than occasionally being decent. To make matters worse, they continue to whiff on top draft picks
6. New England Patriots vs. Indianapolis Colts
Peyton Manning and Tom Brady started this rivalry, but now Andrew Luck continues the tradition. The last two seasons the Colts have been eliminated from the playoffs by the Patriots. What makes this an interesting rivalry is that the Colts directly led to the Deflategate scandal.
5. New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons
The Saints are currently regressing, but these teams still put on a fun show when they meet. The reason for that is both of these teams boast several offensive playmakers, while struggling on defense. If you like points, this rivalry is for you.
4. Dallas Cowboys vs. Entire NFC East
Each week that the Cowboys play a divisional opponent, it feels like it would make their season to beat Dallas. It is special kind of hate where the entire division all guns for one team. Tony Romo and Jerry Jones only add fuel to fire.
3. Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers
The longest rivalry in NFL history, of course, deserves a spot on this list. Everything about these two teams adds up to a classic must-see rivalry. Both teams were original members of the NFL and have found consistent success. Pair that with fan loathing and you have yourself a fun rivalry.
2. Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning
Unfortunately, it seems like this is Peyton’s last year in the league. But that should not make us forget how fun these match-ups were. These two legends put on some instant classics. Manning may have the stats, but Brady has the rings.
1. Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens
When these two teams meet, it feels like every time the game is decided by one possession. Not only are the games close, but also these two franchises flat out hate each other. No other rivalry today in the NFL can compare to this heavyweight fight.
Some of you may not agree with this list, but there is no doubting many of these match-ups should be on your top ten NFL rivalries.
