10 Things Black Parents Say That Their Kids Know All Too Well

The greatest thing about going to an HBCU is that we all share a lot of common memories. My friends and I were talking about how we were raised, and the things our parents used to say to us. We soon realized that there has to be some type of handbook that all black parents use, in order to pull out the annoying sayings that we have all heard. I've decided to put a list together of the top 10 sayings that all black parents have said to their children.

1. I'm not one of your little friends.

This is one of the most confusing sayings ever. One day your mom will try be one of your friends by asking you about who you are dating, or about the recent party that you went to, but the moment that you act like she is your actual friend, BOOM, it has turned into world war III.

2. You have Mcdonald's money?

No mom. No, I do not have money for Mcdonalds and that is exactly why I am asking you to buy it for me, duh.

3. You better know that school work the same way you know those song lyrics.

I know everyone has heard this one. I absolutely hate it. All you're doing is walking around your house singing your favorite song, and then next thing you know your mother is hitting you with this awful saying. School work is hard, song lyrics on the other hand, are extremely easy.

4. Fix your face before I fix it for you.

What I want to know is since when was it a crime to show emotion? And how in the world do you fix someone's face for them. The worst thing about this saying is that sometimes you don't even have an attitude and your parents will still hit you with this one.

5. Stop crying before I give you something to cry about.

This one is probably the worst, obviously, we are already crying for a reason so we don't need you to make it worst.

6. When we get in this store don't touch or ask for anything.

What is the point of me even coming in and on top of that parents know that their child is going to ask for something anyway.

7. Stay in a child's place.

I hate this one so much. As a child I was very nosey, so I heard this saying all the time. All I had to do was question an adult and I was hit with "stay in a child's place" line. For some people, this line was followed by a backhand from grandma.

8.You smell like the outside.

What? The outside? People who have never heard this before may be wondering what the outside smells like, let's just say it's a combination of dirt, sweat, and grass that you don't want to encounter.

9. I don't care what everyone else got on the test, I'm not their parent.

Your parent will be quick to say this when you try to justify the bad grade that you received in class, by saying that everyone else received a bad grade too.

10. Who are you talking too?!

Your parents always know good and well that you are talking to them, but they're still nice enough to ask you this in order to clean up whatever you said.

So, there you have it, the top 10 black parent sayings that I'm sure everyone has heard at least once. When I was talking about this with my friends it was weird to think that even though we're from all over the nation we still share the same common experiences. It's also funny to think that when we were younger we hated hearing these sayings, now looking back at them, they are all hilarious.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
