If there is one thing I love more than Shonda Rhimes herself, it is the couples she creates. Between all of her shows, there have been many couples for fans like to me fall in love with. However, there have also been a lot of couples that I wish never existed. My friends have declared me an expert on all things Shonda so I’ve put together a list of what I feel are the top ten best, and top ten worst couples of Shondaland.
It’s a lot more entertaining to start with the bad-- so here are the top 10 worst couples of Shondaland:
10. Alex and Izzie (Grey’s Anatomy)
While they did love each other at the beginning of their relationship, the whole thing was basically a whirlwind starting with her getting cancer. The number one thing that solidifies them on this list though is when Izzie decides to leave Alex without warning or any regards towards his feelings.
9. Violet and Pete (Private Practice)
There was just so much wrong with this relationship from the very beginning. Between Violet’s inability to stick it out when things got tough and Pete’s inability to communicate, along with his anger issues, they were doomed from the start. Their problems escalated very quickly and turned into resentment on both sides, making their relationship very toxic.
8. Callie and George (Grey’s Anatomy)
Even though none of George’s friends were on board with this relationship, Callie and George decided to get married after the death of George’s father. The repercussions of that decision eventually led to the downfall of this relationship. George realized he had acted too impulsively and had an affair, which led to the end of the marriage and Callie discovering she also liked women.
7. Penny and Callie (Grey’s Anatomy)
Callie deciding to date the person who basically killed McDreamy caused major problems for the rest of characters on this show. This relationship is the center of major drama and nobody has time for that.
6. Cyrus and James (Scandal)
Forcing your husband to lie under oath is one thing. Pimping out your husband and then getting mad when he actually goes along with it is another. Not to mention Cyrus bribes James with a baby to get him to go along with his evil plans. This relationship was basically one horrendous thing after another and was good for nobody.
5. Amelia and Owen (Grey’s Anatomy)
Besides the fact that Owen was meant to be with Cristina, this relationship has other issues. Owen knows what he wants and knows what it takes to get there, while Amelia does everything on impulse and has no set plan for her life. They use the fact that they both have dark pasts to justify the relationship, making it very negative in nature.
4. Jackson and April (Grey’s Anatomy)
This relationship was destined for failure when April and Jackson decided to hook up in a bathroom instead of focusing on their medical boards, they clearly never had their priorities straight. The two were never able to consider the other’s feelings in any decision they made which eventually led to the downfall of the relationship.
3. Cristina and Burke (Grey’s Anatomy)
Cristina changed so much to fit into Burke’s life and he left her at the alter taking her dignity and her eyebrows with him.
2. Miranda and Tucker (Grey’s Anatomy)
Tucker never attempted to understand Miranda, nor did he attempt to support her with her career. He blamed her for everything and never accepted responsibility for his own downfalls. In the end, Tucker held Miranda back and after they ended things she was finally able to make it to the top.
1. Amelia and Ryan (Private Practice)
When the whole relationship is held together by a drug addiction it’s pretty much destined for failure. There was absolutely nothing good that came out of this relationship and it is hands down the worst relationship in the Shondaland universe.
Moving on to happier times, the top ten best Shondaland couples are:
10. Richard and Catherine (Grey’s Anatomy)
They prove that at no matter how old you are it is never too late to find love, which everyone needs to be reminded about sometimes. They challenge each other to still achieve greatness even though most people would write them off due to age. There is never a shortage of support in their relationship, and they continue to prove that age is just a number when it comes to love.
9. Callie and Arizona (Grey’s Anatomy)
They suffered tragedy after tragedy together and even though they didn’t work out in the end, they still were very supportive of each other. They didn’t just give up right away when things got difficult. They tried to make it work, but in the end they realized what was best for them and their child.
8. Bailey and Ben (Grey’s Anatomy)
Unlike Baileys first husband Tucker, Ben truly understands Bailey, and Bailey is thriving now that they are together. She inspires him to go after his dreams, like becoming a surgeon. Ben has also taken in Bailey's son Tuck like he was his own, and he has become a great role model and father figure to him.
7. Addison and Jake (Private Practice)
Jake was the best thing to happen to Addison all throughout “Private Practice”. He was there for her from the time he joined the cast, to the time the show ended. He was willing to put his happiness above his, and was willing to start her journey of parenting without even being asked. Addison in turn brought a light into Jake that he had been missing for quite some time. They are truly a vision when it comes to relationships.
6. Fitz and Olivia (Scandal)
Fitz and Olivia did the unimaginable for each other. She rigged an election for him and he went to war for her. They were willing to do whatever it took to make the other person happy, regardless of the consequences to themselves. Fitz built the ultimate dream house in Vermont for him and Liv. They are *almost* relationship goals.
5. Cristina and Owen (Grey’s Anatomy)
This relationship was overflowing with passion from the very beginning. They helped each other overcome some truly horrible things, from PTSD, to a shooting and plane crash. They were side by side through it all. Even when Cristina left she still made sure that someone was there to keep and eye on Owen and make sure that he was always doing all right.
4. Mark and Lexie (Grey’s Anatomy)
A lot of people didn’t like this duo because of the huge age gap between them, but they didn’t let that stop them from having a truly loving relationship. Sadly everything was cut short when Lexie tragically died while Mark held her hand and confessed that he still, and always would, love her.
3. Teddy and Henry (Grey’s Anatomy)
Although short lived, their relationship was one of my personal favorites. Teddy was willing to do whatever it took to make sure that Henry got the care he deserved, so she married him. They had to learn to love each other but that’s what made their story so great. Teddy inspired Henry to live, and Henry inspired Teddy to love.
2. Derek and Meredith (Grey’s Anatomy)
I will probably get a lot of disagreement on the placement of this relationship because they honestly were almost perfect. Derek and Meredith had a hard journey of a relationship but they made it work. Derek made Meredith realize that she was worthy of being loved and loving someone back. Just like Derek said in season two, Meredith saved him. She was the light at the end of a dark tunnel for him, and they really made each other grow into the most loving people.
1. Charlotte and Cooper (Private Practice)
Charlotte and Cooper are relationship goals. It took them a while to actually get together but once they were they were unstoppable. They were imperfectly perfect, and truly brought out the best in each other. They knew the other person’s flaws and didn’t let that stop them from showering each other with love. Besides, any couple that can lie in bed and eat fried chicken together is pretty much perfect.
Shonda Rhimes, ultimate relationship creator and destroyer.
