Top 10 Bars In Winston Salem

“Work Forest” gets especially crazy at this time of year due to finals and end of semester events. Therefore, a popular activity among seniors and those 21+ is to kick back with friends and head to the bar scene downtown. Winston-Salem doesn’t broadcast itself as a bar-town so you have to know where to look. Our seniors gave us some insight, so here are the top 10 best bars in Winston-Salem:

1. Wise Man Brewing

Wiseman’s as the locals call it is a happening spot. Ranked #1 by most seniors, Wiseman’s is a laidback atmosphere with a wide variety of assorted beers. Most warm afternoons, you can find many Wake students enjoying the patio here, sipping cool refreshers.

2. Tate’s Craft Cocktails

Tate’s is where you go on a Wednesday night when you realize you don’t have as much work as you thought, and you want to “Treat yo’self.” Enjoy the fun atmosphere as this spot is smack dab in the middle of downtown in a very lively section.

3. Foothills Brewing

What’s better than hanging out with friends and kicking back a few beers? Adding food to the mix, of course. Foothills has a very assorted menu with lots of delicious small plates. My personal favorite is the soft pretzels with cinnamon butter and cheese dips.

4. Finnegan’s Wake Irish Pub & Kitchen

This spot is where you will find everyone on St. Patrick’s Day. Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. They have a wonderful assortment of drinks and serve brunch, lunch and dinner depending on when you arrive. They even have live music and events, so check the calendar and then come out for a fun time!

5. Gatsby’s Pub

Gatsby’s is one of a kind. If you like karaoke and want to sing your heart out, this is the place for you. A hidden gem in Winston-Salem, you’ll surely have a great night here!

6. Old Winston Social Club

Old Winston is the place to go if you’re looking for a night on the town. Whether it’s a GNO or you’re just looking to treat yourself a bit, Old Winston should be your first stop! There are live bands, luxurious food and drink selections, and it has something for everyone.

7. Small Batch Beer Co.

If you’ve ever seen the giant milkshakes from Burger Batch, then get excited! Small Batch is the bar attached to Burger Batch so it provides a drinking service and yummy snacks for when you get the drunk munchies. It’s a win-win situation for sure!

8. Bull’s Tavern

Bull’s Tavern always has something going on. Whether it’s

live music, karaoke, or an event like “Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s,” you can always find something to entertain and indulge in.

9. Recreation Billiards

Rec Billiards is an entertaining spot, and a great place for people watching. Order your drink, sit back and be entertained as many intoxicated strangers wander through the bar. If you come with a competitive edge, this is your spot for you can play pool to your heart’s delight!

10. Whiskey Box

The Whiskey Box is located under Rec Billiards so this is the natural next stop on your evening extravaganza. This is a completely different scene, as it is physically a darker space which makes for some interesting encounters.

So there you have it, the top 10 bars in Winston Salem. Hopefully you can now decide where you want your next downtown adventure to take place. Happy Drinking!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
