10 Ways College Kids Need To Check Themselves Before They Wreck Myself

College is an adjustment. Granted, I went to a boarding school in high school, but some of you test my patience so much. Here's some things that bother me so much while living with young adults.

1. Leaving Laundry in the Dryer or Washer

Okay, I get that some of you probably never had to do laundry until you got to college, but IT'S NOT HARD. Some kids really be leaving their laundry in the washer or dryer all day.

- Take your crap out of your pockets before you wash them.

- Use detergent and fabric softener (or cheat and use Tide pods *don't eat them!*).

- Use your phone timers, so you can get your laundry out and let someone else use the washer/dryer.

- Make sure you take all your stuff with you.

- Take the lint out of the washer!

Ugh, I swear some of y'all never had your clothes stolen at a public laundromat and it really shows.

2. Kids That Take Use The Whole Sidewalk

Swear this is every day as I walk to class. Make room for others. No one cares if you're walking in a huge group, MOVE!

3. Bodily Fluids Where They Should NEVER Be

Story Time! One time, I was on my way to brush my teeth before bed and I saw... wait for it... a USED condom taped to the wall less than 10 feet from my dorm room. Oh, there's more nasty stories I have and I'm only a sophomore! Come on y'all, it's no surprise people get "the plague" at random times. DISGUSTED.

4. Yelling Over One Another

I'm not sure if this is just an east coast thing, but y'all really be yelling while homegirl Becky be tryna spill some tea or tell me about her mental health. OR homegirl be tryna tell a story and someone screams "OH THAT REMINDS ME OF THIS TIME..."

*Eye rolls to the back of head* Homie, sit down and wait your turn, you attention snob.

5. Tangents After Tangents... After Tangents

Class is not therapy, friend. I paid money to hear about Max Weber's sociological theory of capitalism, not what your roommate and their partner did, nor hear your lame morbid (borderline worrisome) jokes about how you did that thing in middle school.

6. Students Talking Out Of Their Arses

This is similar to #5, but different context. Some kiddos really think what they're saying makes sense, but they're missing the bigger picture of learning. Why? Y'all didn't read or you skimmed the reading and did not bother to look up a summary.

No. You are not fooling us boo boo. Sit down and skim it in class or be admit that you didn't read at all. No shame in being human, love.

7. Underestimating A Liberal Arts or Community College Education

Some students do develop a superiority complex and will look down on you for not attending a bigger or more exclusive institution. Some will brave and will say something and, boy, is the disrespect REAL... but their shock makes up for it.

Yes, it just so happens my professors have a doctorate degree just like yours does. The difference is that I add to their teachings by questioning and analyzing the material, not disrespecting other students of different interests or different opportunities.

8. Never Staying Humble

College is full of wonderful opportunities and I encourage everyone to take advantage of them because I love seeing people succeed. However, I have to draw the line at people who continually brag about themselves and what they are doing.

Personally, you get two chances to tell me about it, after that you have officially crossed the threshold into being an attention grabber. If you want people to know, tell them individually because it definitely means more when you pick specific people to share accomplishments with.

9. Never Trying To Understand The Opposing View

I think this is not just a college issue, rather a larger one. However, college is a time to explore differences of people who not like you. Before you venture out into the world on your own, try to understand as much of it as you can while you still have time to correct yourself.

Even attempt to try to understand a different perspective that is opposite from yours. You don't have to agree with it, but understanding it allows you to see why a certain individual feels strongly about their opinion. Remember the door for understanding goes both ways.

10. Treating University/College Workers Disrespectfully

Last one, I HATE it when I see people treating food workers, work study students, or any service worker with disrespect. I don't care if they're not in a happy mood when they hand your damn Starbucks cup, that gives you no right to say something ugly or complain to their supervisors.

Granted, there are circumstances that warrant a complaint, but in most - you are not entitled to treating humans with disrespect.

Thanks for coming to my college TED Talk. I hope you laughed or agreed or disagreed with something mentioned.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
