Too Many School Shootings

There are so many shootings these days.

Don’t you get tired of hearing about shootings in cities, during events, and in schools?

I know I am. Some terrible things have happened in American schools, especially with Columbine High School being the worst of them all. There has been much grief and many tears, but has there been anything done about it? In my opinion, no.

First, schools have no protection. Many schools have doors that can only open with a staff member’s pass. Although, what the school forgets is that anybody can arrive on campus in the morning, after school, and during class changes without anyone noticing. There is no control on who is on campus and who is not. There are no walls built around the school and a school gate to protect us, students.

The school can be reached any day, at any time.

Second, the way schools accept visitors inside the school is horrifying to me. All you have to say is that you have an appointment with a teacher or a staff member (and they do not always double check). You do not even have to go through the front office to enter the school. You could use one of the doors students use to go to class.

I know that there are at least cameras and police officers around, but that is not enough. Their primary purpose is not to aggravate situations but they don't prevent them.

Things need to change. Too much freedom is not good. We need to find a balance between each and apply it to schools. We need to start protecting schools. We need to start protecting students. We need to protect all those innocent lives that are at risk every day.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
