The date and stage were set, UFC 223, The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, April 7th, 2018 "El Cuyuy" Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC Lightweight Championship. This was the 4th attempt at booking this huge fight. Everything was going great as the anticipation was building like no other. Then while doing his media and press obligations Tony trip over one of those thick tv production wires and tore his LCL off the bone. It was such a brutal, brutal injury his ligament tore completely tore off of the bone. This was the beginning of the crazy weekend that had transpired including the incident with Conor Mcgregor.
Ferguson went through surgery and the scar he posted Instagram was definitely something to remember in July. At this point, the Lightweight division was a little in limbo. Conor fighting was out of the question because of his legal issues. No one really knew when Tony Ferguson would make his return because of the severity of his injury. People especially questioned if he would be the same with his movements and footwork,
Fast forward to now, as we are approaching September the end of the year is looking beyond spectacular. On top of the news that Conor Mcgregor is making his return versus Khabib Nurmacomedov for the UFC Lightweight Championship October 6th, it was also announced Nate Diaz would be making his long-awaited return to the octagon against Dustin Poirier at Madison Square Garden November 3rd. But a few days ago the mix-martial arts world was shaken up as Tony Ferguson announced he has been cleared to fight on his Instagram.
Many did not know if Tony would even be cleared to fight by the end of the year. He was determined and is still the same old "El Cuyuy" with his tremendous footwork and dance numbers on his social media. But now Tony Ferguson is back after such a horrific incident that made a lot of fans question if he could even fight again, what should be next for him?
After the injury had taken place Tony had been stripped of his Interim-title so it is a little unclear where he fits into the picture at this point. It would definitely be ideal to give him the winner of Khabib vs Mcgregor or even the winner of Diaz vs Poirier. When considering the factors including that Ferguson is easily one of the best and deadliest fighters in the 155-pound division it is hard to figure out who is next for him until Mcgregor vs Khabib takes place. Also considering that Tony has beaten mostly everyone in the division and was on a complete tear through the competition before the injury.
The UFC always is good at match-making and throwing on a terrific show for the finds so it is nice to wonder what Dana and the boys have planned for "El Cuyuy" ever since he announced that he had been cleared to fight. Now we just need the Announcement of when and who he will clash with.
