The Tony Awards were on Sunday, June 10th, and boy were there a ton of headlines. Between "A Band's Visit" cleaning house, Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban winning the hearts of the audience, and Robert DeNiro's famous "F*** Trump" statement, the 72nd installment of the Radio City spectacle was nothing short of next day talking points.
Let's face it: this season wasn't full of attention-grabbing musicals or plays for that matter. All four 'Best Musical' contenders were based on movies and the contenders for 'Best Play' were full of revivals.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with movies turned musicals or revivals. Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" found success in the 'Best Leading Actor' and 'Best Featured Actor' with Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane winning in their respective categories. A new favorite among audiences young and old, "Harry Potter and The Cursed Child", won "Best Play" for the evening. The musical, "A Band's Visit", won a whopping ten Tony awards, taking home the big categories of 'Best Musical', 'Best Score', 'Best Leading Actor', and 'Best Leading Actress'. Between mind-blowing musical performances (hello, "Carousel"!) and well-earned awards for a job well done, there was nothing short of a fantastic pool of performances for the general public.
Perhaps the greatest Tony hosts since Neil Patrick Harris, "Waitress"'s Sara Bareilles and "Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812"'s Josh Groban were as musical as they were hilarious. They opened up with a dueling piano style performance; an ode to the losers (both Bareilles and Groban didn't win the Tony for their performances in their respective shows). Later, they performed a parody of Sia's hit "Chandelier", singing the woes of having an eight-show week on Broadway.
We also can't forget when Groban came dressed as Bareilles' Jenna and Bareilles the same with Groban's Pierre. This was also known as the greatest crossover event since "Infinity War".
The most heartwarming and touching moment of the night consisted of Ming Na Wen giving out the Tony to a theatre teacher. It is something that is done every year, a Tony that recognizes the great leaps and bounds that theatre/drama teachers in high schools have to perform in order for their students to shine brightly.
This year, the award went to Melody Herzfeld, the heroic drama teacher from Parkland, Florida who hid 65 students in her office while a mass shooter rampaged outside on February 14th, 2018. To honor her, the Marjory Stoneman Douglass drama students sang an absolutely beautiful rendition of "Seasons of Love" from the musical "RENT".
What a special reminder as we wait for next year's awards.
