One Christmas morning my life changed forever. I excitedly flew down the stairs to find the best present I could have ever dreamed of sitting underneath the tree: a frenzied furball adorned with a red ribbon hurtled toward me at top speed. We collided and I fell to the floor in a fit of exuberant giggles and squeals. From this moment on my new friend and I were inseparable.
One’s childhood dog is possibly one of the most important friendships that they will ever have. A dog teaches about laughter, love, and honesty. Dogs are so pure and wholehearted. Unlike cats, who, between us, are quite honestly calculating and manipulative (but that’s another story.)
A dog is your constant companion, they are there when you are sad. They are there when you’re bored and need someone to play with. Yes, they are especially always there when you are eating any kind of food or around any type of substance that even slightly resembles food. A child is a part of the family.
They are the missing puzzle piece that you were not so sure you were missing until now. Without them, your home wouldn't be quite so welcoming and your heart would not be as full. Without them, your home wouldn’t be a home. They have seen you grow and you have seen them as well. The progression from the reckless puppy always ripping your new clothes and gnawing on the furniture, to the quiet companion resting by your feet as you attempt to do homework has been remarkable.
Dogs relish in the little things, and they teach their families to do the same. They don’t ask for much, just a simple belly rub or toss of the ball will send their tail into a frenzy of fur.
Growing up alongside something so contagiously happy and innocent shines life into your life. It allows you to view the bowl as half full, not half empty. My life would be immensely different if I didn’t grow up with a dog. Yes, there would still be laughs and memories, teaching moments and fun. However, I don’t feel as though I would be the person who I am today. My family would not be the same. My life would be completely different. My childhood dog was my second sibling. I grew up with him. It is true what they say that dogs are man’s best friend, but more importantly, they are a child’s best friend. A best friend that will forever be their first.
