Tomboy-ish

Just being one of the boys

Tomboy-ish

For as long as I can remember, I've always been one of the boys. Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Bey Blades, Super Smash Bros. and, most importantly, getting pegged with tennis balls during recess. I wouldn't have ever traded the way I grew up for lip gloss or stereotypical "girly" things. Trust me, having girls be significantly pissed off that you wanted the same Dooney & Bourke purse they wanted was a little over-rated to me.

I'll never forget the time I was the only girl on my baseball team when I was in elementary school and I wore purple underwear under my white baseball pants. You had a lot to put up with, Dad. Let's also recognize that my Dad helped me blow-dry my hair for school until I was almost 13.

Anyway, I've always been a tomboy. To this day at 23 years-old, I'm currently wearing an over-sized men's tank top as a dress as I'm typing this. I'm often guilty of shopping in the men's section and I hate the color pink. I live with three boys who are well into their twenties, so I guess you can call them grown men. I still call them boys. I've given up on trying to keep up with the beer bottles on the coffee table and the dishes piled high in the kitchen sink. Our house has a permanent stench. That's okay though, I would never love them any less. Luckily, we get along and enjoy binge watching Netflix together.

Looking back, I didn't even own a hair straightener or knew such thing was possible until high school. I don't remember the last time I curled my hair or wore a real bra. I gave up on the underwire, the age of push up bras have surpassed me. I'm the queen of t-shirts.

Of course I had girlfriends in high school, but you could always catch me with the guys everyday after hockey practice. They just seemed easier to keep up with and easier to fit in with. College was the same deal, you could always find me and the couple of girl friends I had dressed to the 9's (over-sized hoodies and leggings or t-shirt we stole from the boys.) Lounging around watching TV together or drinking Natty Lights. My personal fave was a 2XL old school wizards basketball hoodie.

Over the years, I've grown to love the ridiculing, the pranks, their foul language and dirty jokes. I can't say that spending most of my free time with the guys has educated me any more on how their brains work though. That'll forever be a mystery, but I'm sure they can say the same for us girls.

Shoutout to all of my guy friends over the years, I like to credit some of my level headed-ness to you guys.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
