Welcome back to B-Town, Hoosiers!
With the transition back into school underway, tailgate season is already upon us. In order to fully enjoy the craziness and excitement that awaits us -- before, during and after the upcoming football games -- we need to be dressed for the part. Here is a basic guide of what to wear to a tailgate for any and all Hoosiers to explore.
Ladies:
Consider the plaid shirt. It is an important part of every girl’s
wardrobe, whether in the form of an oversized flannel or a thin button up. Choosing a
plaid that fits the temperature of the season -- and ties in with the
traditional cream and crimson color scheme -- is a perfect option for tailgating.
They can be knotted and paired with high-wasted shorts. You can roll up the sleeves in
the warmer months or wear it over leggings in the fall. Either way, plaids are necessary
tailgate staple pieces.
Overalls. We never get tired of them. From candy stripes to denim shorts,
overalls are always a cute go-to when it comes to tailgate outfits. Wear them
with one strap or two, and pair them with a spirited tank top.
Of course, there is the classic crop top and high-waisted shorts combo. A trend that came back in a big way last year, crop tops continue to be cute, comfortable and seasonally appropriate tailgate wear. Make sure to pair them with your favorite high-waisted shorts, whether they are denim with American flag pockets or solid black with decorative buttons. Either way, this classic combination is the perfect design for an ideal tailgate ensemble.
Gentlemen:
Tanks, tanks, tanks. This can work for the ladies as well, but especially for the men, tank tops are the ideal tailgate piece. We know you have tons of them. Pair them with colored shorts for a solid outfit -- just make sure the colors actually go together.
Speaking of shorts, colored and straight fit shorts should be a staple piece of every guy's wardrobe for tailgating. We know you have seven pairs of cargos sitting in the back of your closet, begging to be worn, probably alongside 10 pairs of athletic shorts. Please don't do it. Invest in bringing a little more color and class to your closet -- and to the tailgate.
Don't forget about your sunglasses. Whether you got them at the mall, received them during orientation, or were blessed with a free pair from an organization raising awareness on campus, you've got plenty. As I'm sure you've learned by now, you'll definitely need them for the tailgate, as well as the game that follows.
Everyone:
As enticing as it may be to wear flip flops during the hot months, it's best to avoid them and go with sneakers. It sounds boring, but you'll be glad to have your toes covered and feet protected amidst the chaos of sporting events. Try a pair of Sperrys, Vans, Keds, Converse, or Nikes to add some flair and avoid the boredom of a basic tennis shoe.
Never underestimate the value of a fanny pack. Whether you find them fashionable or not, they are extraordinarily useful and provide the perfect hands-free bag to hold your iPhone and wallet while you cookout and cheer in the stands. Use your Greek organization's personalized fanny pack or just order one online for $10 or less. Either way, make sure you snag one this season.
Don't forget about the most important tailgate trend: IU gear. Jerseys, tanks, t-shirts, shorts, ball cap -- whatever it may be, show your support for your fellow Hoosiers and make sure to never arrive at a tailgate without some article of IU clothing.
Keep in mind, these are just suggestions -- it's always more fun to spice up your tailgating outfit with your own personal touches. Be sure to visit TIS, the Union Bookstore, or Tracks to pick up whatever you might need. Happy tailgating, Hoosiers!
