When it comes to early mornings, whether that be early mornings for work or class, I'm prone to snoozing my alarm and then running out of time for important things like breakfast. And if I get too swamped with homework, I can have a hard time finding time to cook. Luckily, toast is the perfect solution to both of these problems. It's quick and easy to make, you can take it on the go with you (unlike cereal which makes a mess), and it's delicious and nutritious. Just plain buttered toast can be a little dull, so I came up with 10 toast-topping ideas to make things a little more exciting.
1. Strawberries, Ricotta, and Balsamic Vinegar
The creamy ricotta coupled with the strawberries makes this one taste almost like a dessert. To avoid making a mess pouring balsamic vinegar on your toast, you can mix the ricotta and balsamic vinegar together in a bowl first.
2. Peanut Butter, Banana, Honey, and Chia Seeds.
Peanut butter and banana is a classic, and it's even better with honey! If you use whole-wheat bread, the protein from the peanut butter and chia seeds will combine with the bread's protein and give you a complete-protein kickstart to your day.
3. Caprese
Spread pesto sauce over your toast and then layer with mozzarella cheese and tomato slices. Personally, I prefer to stick this combo in the oven (10 minutes at 375°) so as to melt the cheese.
4. Sour Cream and Jam
This may sound like an odd combination, but it's actually super delicious! Greek yogurt can be subbed for the sour cream for a healthier option.
5. Banana, Cinnamon, and Sugar
Generously butter your toast then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar (if you pre-mix the cinnamon and sugar, you'll have an easier time getting the proper proportions), top with banana, and then garnish with some more cinnamon.
7. Piña Colada
Spread cream cheese on your toast, and then top with dried coconut flakes (sweetened or unsweetened) and fresh pineapple. Perfect for summer!
8. Cream Cheese, Blueberries, and Granola
This one is sweet and crunchy. I like using vanilla oat granola, but any kind would work.
9. Cream Cheese, Chocolate Chips, and Maple Syrup
This one is basically a dessert but makes a wonderful treat!
10. Hummus, Fried Egg, Kale, and Sriracha
This is probably the healthiest toast on the list. The egg gives your day a nice protein boost, and the kale is anti-inflammatory and has vitamins K, C, and A as well as many other nutrients.
Now get toasting!
