I'm starting this article with with an honest statement: Typically I do not watch political debates. I always felt like so much of it is staged, and it always feels like the arguments go in a circle. More noise than meaning. However, on Monday I made myself sit and watch some of the presidential debate between Trump and Clinton. Only ten minutes into the debate, I realized once again that I cant stand watching these debates. Parts of this may very well have to do with the candidates we have running, but it also has part to do with what mypersonal opinion is about this whole election process:
I believe that the winner of the presidency, regardless of it being Trump or Hillary, will be an inadequate representation of what the American people want. "Well if people don't vote, then they cant complain about it." Which leads to...
I believe that there is a major population of voters at this point that feel so helpless in this voting term. I have talked to countless people (mostly college age) who admit to not wanting to vote for either candidate. There will always be pros and cons to every presidential candidate, but it is a real issue that the ultimate decision for this election will all boil down to "choosing the lesser of two evils."
I believe that Clinton should not be allowed to run for office. The issue with Hillary misusing her email accounts and putting classified information on an unclassified email accounts proves unprofessional. Even more unprofessional was how long she denied the situations, ultimately just to come out and admit her mistake after it was proven that the situation did in fact happen. I truly believe the only reason she is not in jail and is still allowed to run is because in the past she was part of a presidential family, and because she is in high political power. If it were any other politician, they would have had to drop from the race at minimum and/or been given jail time.
I believe that Trump is an example of how poorly structured our political system is. I am not a full-fledged, "I hate Trump" type of voter. I do believe he mishandles things he says and does, but I also agree with numerous policies he has for political issues. The reason I say he is an example of how poorly structured our political system is is this: there should not be a way that an individual with no political experience should be able to win their party. This makes me very skeptical of the political system, and I believe it needs to be restructured.
I believe that another reason that such a large population doesn't vote is because they are uninformed. Here's why: the main two candidates that we have battling it out right now are not even talking about the topics that really matter in their debates. While the debates may start out on topic, ultimately each topic ends with the candidates trying to take low blows at the other's person lives. If I wanted to hear how messed up each candidate was as a person, I would've just gotten on Facebook. When I watch a debate, I expect these candidates to talk about legit ways they are going to try and better our country. When it turns into the candidates arguing back and forth like a married couple that cant even remember why they're fighting, that's when I turn the tv off.
And I'm not alone. If voters cant even stand to listen to the candidates debate, they're not going to know their policies or what they stand for . If they don't know their policies or what they stand for, they will not know who to vote for. If they don't know who to vote for, they simply wont vote. If they wont vote, we will never have an accurate representation of what this country needs.
