I grew up in a military family, and I will always be forever grateful that I did. Being a military brat both blesses you and curses you with one thing: moving, moving and more moving. Right when you feel as if you're getting settled in a new place, it's time to go again. However, if it weren't for the moving, I never would have had the chance to live in Germany. There's nothing quite like being submersed in a completely foreign culture.
If I hadn't moved around a lot, I don't think I would appreciate the home I do have now nearly as much. Touring the world we live in helped me to realize how small some problems are in comparison to the vastness of the world that awaits. There are so many people on this planet -- so many different stories to be told, so many different lives that we have the opportunities to change.
Being around so many people made me realize that we are most definitely not alone no matter how lonely we feel. It made me acknowledge that I am not the only one with highs and lows, that other people have many of the same difficulties I do. As much as I noticed the differences when I went abroad, I also realized how similar we are to our foreign counterparts. I think it's so essential to remember that there is so much history in the world and so many people have come before us and we have the chance to guide the direction of the future- it's easy to forget that during our day to day routines.
Traveling has almost given me a new set of eyes- a glimpse into different perspectives and new ways of seeing the world. The more that I've gone around the world, the more I've realized that home is more than just a city or state, home is the entire the world. I've come to realize how little I actually know about the world.
There are so many things to know out there, and as I have traveled and discovered some of those things, it has led me to really appreciate the life I've been given, because we are only given one.
