As I sit here with my best friend who happens to have the most inspiring, moving and eye opening disorder, I feel sorry for those who haven't been impacted by Trisomy 21, most commonly known as Down Syndrome.
To those who have no idea how incredible Down Syndrome is, this is for you.
You hear "Down Syndrome" and you immediately you think negatively; or feel sorry for the individual who has it, or for the parents who live through it, or the best friends who deal with it. That's the problem, because most who've been affected my Down Syndrome can't picture their life without their special person.
My best friend is one of not too many to have been blessed with Down Syndrome. She is so special and so unique it makes me smile from ear to ear. Hugs bigger than you could ever imagine, massages that last more than 30 seconds, snacks that include all of your favorite munchies, but most of all, the power to change our world. She's been my best friend for over ten years and she completely changed my world from the moment I met her.
I was only five when I saw her for the first time and immediately I knew how special she was. She was different. Goofy, beautiful, entertaining, sassy, she was the most foreign yet comforting thing I have ever seen. I should have known at that moment how seriously she would change me as a person. She molded me into the girl I am, she motivated me to go after the world.
The sleepovers are endless, the laughs are from the gut, my tears are from my heart. She is the light of my life and to think people haven't experienced this disorder boggles my mind. I thank God everyday that he blessed me with her passion and beauty. I see such a different world because of her and I have finally realized how lucky I am to have her as close to me as I do.
To those who haven't been blessed with Down Syndrome, you are missing out to say the least. Those with Down Syndrome have a heart that is bigger than ever and the love they have to offer is indescribable.
